oldprune
So have I got this right? Despite spending £18 million on a flash new building Despite putting on free buses and diverting others to the new market Despite the novelty of a new building Despite giving up a bit of prime retail space in what should be the city's top retail street Despite leaving Haymarket as a land that time forgot Despite the place being featured on BBC News and getting massive publicity Despite numbers being boosted by those popping in to use the free loos. Despite the council not collecting a penny in rent from the stall holders... ...the places isn't attracting any more shoppers than the old place, and they can't find traders to take the free pitches. That is some success story. Edited June 6, 2014 by oldprune

BEDROCK
Went in the market today and quite a few stalls have gone but they have opened the empty space now so it is easier to navigate sections, the other stalls seemed to have expanded into bigger units namely the organic one and opposite that is a great specialist coffee stall, had a good look through and smell of his offerings an I have to say, quite intoxicating, the rum / brandy / whisky ones will have to be bought at some stage very good. They also seems to be more empty food units with the patty one gone but there are two in the corner and they did say there was going to be a fish and chip outlet in there so here's hoping they take the double one as that makes better sense than using a single one. I also saw an ice cream van inside the entrance so not sure how the posh one in the middle feels about that, I think they should have done this traditional trolley style stall at the entrance from the start instead of being tucked away in the middle where the kids will never reach. I think 8/12 were occupied. Has the number shrunk? I thought the ice cream stall was shut down? Has it reopened? they dont need a trolley style stall, they should have just been given a more suitable location i.e opposite the food court or in the main entrance. If its shut, then I hope they relocate into the new development.
RutlandFlyer
None whatsoever. And without checking, I would wager that a number of routes from "the poorer areas in the North of the City" have been rerouted to take in the bottom of the Moor anyway. ---------- Post added 06-06-2014 at 12:20 ---------- Just took a very quick look and the 20/20A and 47/48 stop right outside the market, so thats one myth busted anyway. Havent checked others. ---------- Post added 06-06-2014 at 12:22 ---------- Oops, so does the 83! Are you sure, Rutland Flyer? Hmm? Not sure quite why that's warranted such a prickish response from you, but there were something like 30 bus routes that either ended at Waingate, or didn't go much closer to the Moor. SYPTE raised this as a concern during the consultation. A few routes have been changed, but a most haven't been. Why else would the queues for the FreeBee have been so big at busy times? Or should we just believe you at your word because you can google everything better?
No User Name
Believe me at my word? Not a single bus route ends at Waingate and this is an actual fact. Can you please give details of what routes havent been changed? I have given details of four of the most popular routes covering most areas of the "poor North" (so to speak) which HAVE been amended, which main through city centre routes from the North of the City havent been amended please, and which specific areas does that impact? You cant include "terminus routes" such as the Sheffield-Barnsley bus here as it would be utter ludicrous for that to make a diversion. Plus its only one an hour anyway. When I used the market and came from a different area of town the bus didnt pass by, but I walked or caught another bus.
RutlandFlyer
Maybe they don't actually end there then, maybe some go up the hill to the interchange and maybe some turn around and go back again. SYPTE wouldn't have brought it up if they didn't think it was going to be an issue and the popularity of the FreeBee up until it was cancelled suggests there is a very real need for people to get from Waingate to the Moor and that need is no longer being met. rossyrooney
Yorkshire Bank have announced the closure of the Haymarket branch in September, it's looking pretty bad for the old market area.
