alchresearch
Because their economies are far more robust than Sheffield's.If theres money to be made then investors, developers and retailers will come. If they dont think the prospects are good enough they wont. But investors and developers (Hammersons) did come. Then went again. This has been well documented on the Sevenstone thread if you're not familiar with it.
anywebsite
You could argue that the Liverpool recession started when slavery ended, or the Manchester recession started when the cotton trade died or the Newcastle recession started with the decline of the coal and shipbuilding industries. The difference is that these cities did something about it and have city centres to be proud of. And retail developments continued in Leeds and Liverpool during the recent recession. Have a look at Hammersons projects that continued while the Sheffield one ground to a halt: http://www.hammerson.com/property/shopping-centres/victoria-quarter/ http://www.hammerson.com/property/developments/ http://www.hammerson.com/property/developments/victoria-gate-leeds/ http://www.cnplus.co.uk/news/sectors/retail/april-start-for-hammersons-150m-leeds-shopping-centre/8660061.article#.U5bXZHYvA0E If wasn't so long back that The Moor was a thriving shopping centre. It certainly wasn't as long ago as 30 years like someone claimed. They all look so soulless, I'm glad those Hammerson idiots pulled out.
Anna Glypta
They all look so soulless, I'm glad those Hammerson idiots pulled out. And boarded up property is so much more attractive. We are planning on moving in a few months. If only there were a few boarded up rat infested properties around our current house to boost its value. smiggs
A very constructive post indeed Trigger written in your Sunday best;) By the way where have I said I hope the new Market fails and how do you know that Wilco's are looking at relocating to the Moor will that relocation be to the Old Woolworths building or not? Not really convinced the Wilkos moving story is good news. There is already a wilkos on London road which wilkos is relocating, will one close? Well, good luck, it'll take you a while to scale the MPS building to escape if you're going towards London.

smiggs
If they are going to have one less site, I can't see them announcing it until they're very close to moving in. I'd expect they'll be after a modern unit in the Cinema building rather than an older site.

We are already well south of that, hence the lack of boarded up rat infested buildings.
bladebeer
The bag stall is closing at the Moor market, it is now like a ghost town with apparently the only places that are busy seem to be the cafes and the cheap veg. stalls. Cllr Bramall says that 3 new stalls have opened up and 3 have extended, what about all the ones that have been shuttered since day one .Bring down service charges and extend the free rent period again or charge a sensible rent, and maybe you will see different types of businesses taking up the empty stalls, otherwise I am afraid the market is doomed.
