The New Moor Market

Here's an idea, make the new market 'simply food' (and drink). Move all the typical market tat to another building. If the new market was an exciting eclectic mix of food and drink it could be an exciting place which would attract a wider customer base. All the restaurants in the city centre should be down there every morning sourcing their fresh produce.

 

If it simply gives the impression of the mess of castle market relocated to a new building then it's not going to work and I won't bother going in. If I see card shops, clothes stalls and hairdressers I'm put off. Loads of stalls with a diversity of fish, meat, veg, cheese, beer, wines etc then it could be really good and I would buy stuff and visit regularly. People travel around the world a lot these days and they see what food markets can be like and what an asset to a city centre they can be.

 

I went to the MM for the first time a week ago. I thought it has potential but it's not right yet. Focus on food is my advice. Ditch the other tat as it detracts from the good stuff.

The bag stall is closing at the Moor market, it is now like a ghost town with apparently the only places that are busy seem to be the cafes and the cheap veg. stalls. Cllr Bramall says that 3 new stalls have opened up and 3 have extended, what about all the ones that have been shuttered since day one .Bring down service charges and extend the free rent period again or charge a sensible rent, and maybe you will see different types of businesses taking up the empty stalls, otherwise I am afraid the market is doomed.

Hopefully the bag stall will be replaced by a stall that people want and it'll be busy like the ones you mention ... Busy because there selling things people want !

Cllr Bramall says that 3 new stalls have opened up and 3 have extended, what about all the ones that have been shuttered since day one .Bring down service charges and extend the free rent period again or charge a sensible rent, and maybe you will see different types of businesses taking up the empty stalls, otherwise I am afraid the market is doomed.

 

While it's sad Bagsmore is closing how realistic is a business solely devoted to bags in a fairly downmarket area? Designer hand bags in meadowhall I can see working but in a market it's a bit specialist they've done well to make it last.

 

On a more positive note we've seen another cake stall open, a coffee stall open and there appears to be a jacket potato stall opening in the food court area plus the organic food stall expanded as did one of the cake stalls. The butchers and green grocers always seem busy Crawshaws liked it so much they open a shop on the Moor as well, there are a lot of butchers so if anyone shows weakness they're bound to struggle.

It's not Bags More that's closing, as far as I know, it's the bag stall in the middle of the market that's closing down.

Its up to the stall holders to sell things that people want. They are independent businesses.

 

There is already one bag stall in the market and they had key advantage from the beginning which is being in the entrance rather than mich futher in. It means they get all the customers because people dont go into the market or at least if they do they turn right to the food stalls and not left to the non food ones. the same will happen with a lot of the other non food stalls. They dont sell what people want.

There were still some stalls open today, so I got some fresh trout, baby potatoes & English asparagus for tea. Glad I didn't go to Asda.
