The New Moor Market

Recommended Posts

I went to have a look around on Tuesday but it was so busy in there, l'll leave it for another time but it looks nice.

Does anyone know if there's a fabric stall in there? Looked on the web, but can't find a list of stall holders which is a shame.

There is a fabric stall in the new Market.

They supply undertakers with shroud material so some of us lot may one day benefit from the Market whether we like it or not:)

Been in again today and bought a Treacle Toffee Stout at £2.70 that is made by Wharfe Bank Brewery, and also spoke to the man about supermarkets and he did say that they will only be stocking things that the supermarkets have not got so at least he knows the market he is after meaning specialist drinkers.

There was also a man dressed in white handing out flyers for his deli unit, it is a double unit next to Crawshaw Butchers, he is expecting to open in 2 weeks so good time for Xmas, he said that he will be stocking a good range but am not quite sure which styles, I said he should try pushing the more upmarket stuff and maybe having some award winning products like cheese and the like, he seemed to listen and was talking to people.

There is also a new Italian food unit opening next to that Russian unit, they are opening in 2 weeks and the owners were sizing up the joint, managed to have a word with them and they said they will serve Italian coffee and pastries along with other things, have to see what they sell.

I went today and I too think it is a great improvement. My only criticism is the place was too hot and the stall signs are too high. Looking forward to my next visit!

Great article in the Independent http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/features/grub-street-the-borough-market-of-the-north-8965445.html

A positive review. The comments on Radio Sheffield this morning were also positive, following a visit by a load of people (cannot remember who, but 50 or so) coming to look at the market to pick up ideas - what works, what doesn't etc, for their markets. Bit early to be doing that, I would have thought. Probably better to let it find its feet first.

"Specialist drinkers" made me chuckle. Clearly good at what they do.

I have been in today and thought that the place is brilliant it is just a shame that it has been built away from the traditional Markets area.

The only drawback for me is that the cafe's are no longer confined to there own area space the result being that the concourse reminds me of the departure lounge at East Midland airport to impersonal and crowded.

The traders I spoke to where happy with how things are going I even got a smile from the J.B tools man[ first time ever] so things are looking up.

I know a few have said this but even Meadowhall has units lined up like this and nobody complains about them.

Maybe they could have partitioned the seating area a bit better but at least people can chose to sit or not.

I had one of Zing's Salt Fish Patties earlier and that was nice, just as good as Greggs so cannot fault him.

Staples car park is for staples customers only, people seem to think you don't get ticketed there and they don't see you taking the micky, trust me they do.

It has to be said though, that I know two people who got out of paying the parking fine down there by just ignoring it and not paying. Now this was a few years ago so has it changed and also I am wondering if they clamp there as well ?

Best to check one of the many threads about parking "fines". They do not clamp. However, they can invoice you with something that they try to make look like a fine.

Due to go down to the new Market for the first time tomorrow, has the butcher Barrows moved up there (they were the stall at the bottom of the stairs across from Tissington's in the old place), as they have the best sausagemeat for making sausage rolls for Crimble :)

I noticed last Saturday they'd completely upped sticks from the Castle Market, so was hoping they'd already moved to The Moor...

It is interesting to read some of this thread - clearly the new market should look better than one that's been allowed to die as it was (though hearing the floors were very dirty on day 1 was a surprise - perhaps a few more regular cleaners needed?). Also the idea that The Moor was significantly better than Waingate area before - The Moor's been full of tat and pound shops for years, and plenty of the dodgier characters would've been hanging around on The Moor already. A new Iceland and Poundland in the same block should attract those customers there too?

The market needs to be a success from the off, and keep a good mix of customer, or eventually it will decline as the other place did, when the council have to make cutbacks or raise rents eventually...

I do hope it's a roaring success though, for those traders who have made the brave decision to up sticks after all these years, and their loyal customer base.
