I disagree that its "obviously failing". Footfall may well be less than predictions but that's always a problem with guessing something. Its just that. A guess. Its only been open a couple of years and things always take time to settle. I bet even Castle Market has its ups and downs over its 40 years of operation.

The Moor Market still has 70 odd tenants still trading and paying rent, it has most of its retail units now filled and operating, There is still ongoing work being done on the Moor with Phase 2 and Primark due to move in which one assumes has been factored in to the projections for the Moor Market and its supposed trading figures.

I don't deny that footfall is probably down and I don't deny that some of the stalls cant hack it. However, others can. Maybe its not all about the building and the council. Maybe just maybe some of those traders are just not giving what people want.

Decent opening hours might be a start. With Sainsburys across the street open until 7.00 every night, shops open on bank holiday but the market firmly closed, shops open on Sunday but the market firmly closed, very little offering beyond what is already available in 100s of other shops. They are not exactly helping themselves.

When the Continental Markets come to town or the Specialist Crafts etc they are flooded with people, tills are ringing and people are buying. Why not a little more of that available in the market. That would certainly tempt me in more and im sure I cant be alone.

Indeed.

Things only succeed in business if they are the cheapest or the best. At the moment the Moor Market is neither.

The way to succeed is actually to go upmarket/artisan and appeal to all the west Sheffielders, who are already driving nearby to Waitrose. Late night opening and more/free carparking would help it a lot

This should be its model: http://boroughmarket.org.uk/

Unfortunately the market still has a old school market trader mentality, they believe that all shopping should be done in the daytime.

I'm not sure they can change.

Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield all old school, all packed with shoppers and most important all in the right place.

You are probably right. A lot of market traders flit from market to market. So stalls in Bakewell on Monday turn up in Chesterfield on a Friday. Chesterfield Market does not operate like Sheffield Market. On Thursdays the stalls are turned over to flea market traders and antiques dealers. It attracts different crowds each day. It ensures the town is packed most days which allows town cafes and tea shops to flourish.

I shop at the market regularly - I go about three days a week.

I used to shop at Castle Market when I first moved to Sheffield eleven years ago and did so often for three years but then I stopped going as the quality and price if the fruit and veg was rubbish. Also, the area was increasingly attracting a lot of people that I didn't feel uncomfortable around. Nothing happened though.

Between stopping going to Castle Market and the New Moor Market opening, I shopped at Tesco and Sainsbury's. But I was getting sick of them for a variety of reasons.

Whilst I do a lot of my shopping at the new market, I get most fruit and veg from the greengrocers next door to Dempsey's as it's usually better quality.

The customer service is a criticism I have of the stall holders - some I wont go to because they are so rude!!!

Hi Ricky, The shop your on about next to Dempsey,s is Sharps and you

PS, Next time you shop at Sharps ask for a Portuguese Cabbage if you like

greens but dont over cook it, He or She will tell you in the shop best.

This is a big reason why its failing. I know sooo many people who pass by it on the way home from work and would love to grab some fresh food but are unable to since it closes at 5pm. Instead they go to the Sainsburys, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl and more due to their later opening hours

This is why those older markets flourish, and I also believe most of them are open air markets as well.
