rossyrooney
If market halls are dying it wasn't the brightest move by Sheffield council to spend £18 million building a new one. Perhaps if it evolves along with the plans for the rest of the area it could help bring The Moor back to it's former glory days. The old site was beyond reasonable repair and only traded as long as it did because of the incentives offered to stall holders to keep trading. denlin
I've only been in the new market once, it's rubbish. Why the hell they didn't refurbish Castle House and put it there I'll never know. It's a far more accessible location for people using buses and carrying shopping

AlexAtkin
Even the fabulous Donny Market is losing tenants fast despite having oodles spent on it, markets are dying out with the market generations. Out of town Malls, supermarkets, shopping centres, internet shopping sites are all new competition that the markets had no answer to, we are witnessing the demise of the market hall as we know it and in my opinion the only way they will keep functioning is to become groups of specialists offering groups of high class specialist products at reasonable prices instead of out of date biscuits and second grade fruit and veg. That is exactly what a few stalls WERE doing in Castle. But the massive hike in rent caused them to not move to the new market, so we ended up with garbage. If markets are dying its because they are grossly overcharging for stalls and the storage facilities suck, meaning the produce goes off quicker. The only good reason to go to the extra trouble of visiting the market over home delivery, is to get better quality produce. If they don't offer that, why bother? denlin
You know buses go near the new market, don't you? They don't go that near if you have two large bags of shopping and you are not as young as you used to be. The buses were in much closer proximity to Castle Market or Castle House

Buses stop just outside the market

AlexAtkin
You mean right outside the market like they stop now? Far fewer variety of buses unless you walk to the opposite side of the market to the main entrance. Also a lot of people used the tram which is completely useless for the market now. Vegas1
So next to the market then, got it. Oh, and the tram didn't exist for most of the existence of Castle Market.
