smiggs
But not much use either way. Does anyone on this thread actually go shopping? There is no point parking if you can't get back to your car with what you have bought. Yesterday I loaded my little daughter into the car and we went to do the shop. We went to the supermarket and the local farm shop. I can park right outside both. I got everything, paid for it and was back home in around 50 minutes. I was able to get everything to my car in the trolley. That's the modern way. As Dutch says the truely modern way is to do your big shop online and then do small shops for your one off specialist items. The market is setup quite well for the later as it's near where people work and next to other places where people go for one off items.
sharrovian
The chippy on Charles Street was formerly Pollards coffee shop and restaurant and I believe they pulled out when the proposed Sevenstone plans were revealed some years ago and the property was going to be demolished. It was a shame as they did a really good bacon sandwich.

I use supermarkets for convenience, but if I want fish I always go to the market because almost all supermarket fish is rubbish. Apart from Waitrose the supermarkets have a very limited selection, and Waitrose is very expensive, about double the price of the market for the same quality. And if you're going to Waitrose it's only a very short walk to the market. Likewise with meat, there's a better selection of more varied cuts at the market and you can pick and choose between stalls for the best price and quality. Unlike a supermarket it's a proper free market with true competition. And there's free parking at Staples

Don't you mean its near where people who work near the market work? It isn't near where I work. If I were to go to the market I would pass half a dozen supermarkets, several specialist farm shops, butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers. I could also park right outside each. ---------- Post added 31-12-2015 at 13:24 ---------- And there's free parking at Staples But not much use if you have 50 kilos of shopping to get back to the car and it is chucking it down with rain. Whereas if I shop on a wet day I can park in the underground carpark at Sainsburies and unload my shopping trolley straight into the car boot. Edited December 31, 2015 by foxy lady
Eric Arthur
Or just pay a couple of quid to have it delivered to my door.
foxy lady
No it is not the modern way. You can use your phone, tablet, laptop or PC. No need for a trolley. All you need to do is open the door when they come. You don't even need to carry your own bags from your car to your door. On the brighter side, I met an old market customer last week who has started to use the new one a bit more often now, although she preferred the old market. I suppose if I needed to save the time and didn't need petrol or cash I could shop on line. However I prefer to select my meat, fruit and veg rather than have the lad from the supermarket fill my box with the leftovers that no one else would buy. Eric Arthur
That's what your local butcher and greengrocer is for.

Well if all you are doing is popping out for a few items that you could carry to a car parked in Staples car park, then there isn't much point making the journey to the market. If all you want is fresh meat, fish and vegetables, there are far better places than the market and they are far more convenient. Whirlow Hall Farm springs to mind, but there are plently of others. All I'm getting out of this is Sheffield Market is OK for odd bits and bobs if you work within a few hundred metres, but if you need to take the car it's not worth the effort. Cant comment on the fish as I don't eat it. Likewise with meat, there's a better selection of more varied cuts at the market and you can pick and choose between stalls for the best price and quality. I agree that they do have a greater selection and one of the reasons that when I'm in the area I pop in. Unlike a supermarket it's a proper free market with true competition. As far as prices are concerned there is hardly any difference between stalls and the quality is about the same, also so there is not much true competition between them. The 3 main large veg stalls also offer the same goods at the same prices and by the look of some items sold its not grade A or good quality either. And there's free parking at Staples I though the car park was for Staples customers or has SCC done a deal?
