taxman
So say Cameron and Clegg Minor "They said that the "two million poorest families who currently receive a discount on gas and electricity will continue to do so", but the government would pay for the discount, instead of it being included on energy bills. That will reduce annual bills by approximately £12, the BBC understands. The money to pay for the discount would be paid for from extra tax money brought in from cracking down on tax avoidance, they wrote." So Labour pledge a price freeze and the libcons imagine some sort of avoidance levy. The phrase "making it up as you go along" seems appropriate. El Cid
I have just change to First Utility, so I will need to look into the discount for 'poor' users. https://www.gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme/eligibility Each supplier has different criteria, its worth checking

Mecky
It won't happen because it'll probably cost votes or more importantly, political party donations. £12? Don't spend it all at once
Nagel
How can they crack down on tax avoidance? By definition it's legal, or do they mean they will make certain tax avoidance schemes illegal? It's tax evasion that's illegal and that they can crack down on, but I suppose it's all polotical spin and they can come out with any old rubbish. The argument that tax avoidance is legal is one of the biggest cop out arguments going. 1. Much of what is legal shouldn't be, and is quite often covered by retrospective legislation to tackle it. 2. Much of what is declared as avoidance is actually evasion. There are grey areas. All brought to you by inept legislation, corporate cronyism, corrupt politicians, a HMRC up its own backside and a legion of tax accountants and lawyers. Cue some total prat to try and argue it's all OK because the 99% are allowed to have ISAs.
Cyclone
Cue some total prat to claim that legal things are illegal because they don't like them. Except when they are legal like ISAs, which they don't mind.
Longcol
How can they crack down on tax avoidance? Presumably by closing some of the existing "loopholes".

Let's do the ISA argument thingy ---------- Post added 01-12-2013 at 16:10 ---------- After posting I had a moment to ponder what Chuck Norris thinks about taxes and what he would do, this moment inspired by Cyclone's signature of course. Chuck doesn't like rich people not paying their taxes. http://www.foxnews.com/story/2009/02/27/chuck-norris-defends-second-amendment-talks-taxation/ Enjoy!
