Accidentally burnt £20

Recommended Posts

You can send it off to the Bank of England - See here: http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/pages/damaged_banknotes.aspx

A bank may change it for you, but usually only if you have an account with them. I'm not sure if a Post Office would change it.

IIRC for it to be exchangeable more than 75% of the note must be intact. If I'm right the reason for that is to stop people tearing them in half and then claiming 2 new notes from the 2 halves.

It's more than 50% - see the link above.

On the site mentioned above there is a form to print off. Fill it in (it has a section for your bank details) and send it to the Leeds address together with the note. They will put the money into your bank account. I recently did this and the money was in my bank within about 7 to 10 days. BTW I sent it recorded delivery for extra security.

Fair enough. Someone mentioned the 75% figure to me years ago.
