AMR67
Have Sheffield council ever blocked expansion of Meadowhall or Crystal Peaks shopping centres? I never said the council had blocked development of Meadowhall or Crystal peaks. What I'm saying is unlike Leeds City council, Sheffield hasn't got the foresight to develop areas that may attract other businesses. you've got to speculate to accumulate. When you've got 4 big cities within 35 miles of each other (including Manchester & Nottingham) you've got to keep up or die a slow and painful death. Unless it's in the city Centre then SCC aren't interested.

But the council don't develop commercial sites, it's the national developers who need to be interested and they clearly aren't based on the Sheffield demographic. Furthermore, I think a lot of it is to do with political meddling
alchresearch
So, Leeds City council has given permission for the extension of the White Rose shopping Centre by upto 50%. Just another example of why Leeds is now streets ahead of Sheffield, not just developing the city centre but allowing expansion out of town. Sheffield Council take note!! To be fair I believe its only a Debenhams, cinema, and one other store. ETA: Here you go: a cinema, expanding Primark & Debenhams existing stores, more food outlets and a bigger staff car park. Nothing to get too angry about, unless you already run a cinema or food outlet. http://www.morleyobserver.co.uk/news/local/plans-to-expand-white-rose-shopping-centre-approved-1-6314807
999tigger
What boyfriday said. AMR67 I think you misunderstand the power and the role of the Council. You have to get businesses who want to develop here amd they will do that if there are good financial reasons to do so. If you hadnt noticed then Sheffield is less prosperous than surrounding cities and its hard to make an attractive case to developers. Retail is moving online at a very fast pace and expanding Medowhall isnt always going to be the answer.
alchresearch
I think that's precisely what Bradford have objected to with this plan - their own project is failing and Leeds has picked up the ball. You can blame the "economic climate" or any other factor. But the reality is people have money in their pockets and want to spend it.
