Help fitting new ceiling light

Recommended Posts

i am trying to fit a new ceiling lamp. when i have taken off the old ceiling rose the wires from the ceiling are black, blue, yellow and green and red (3 red). i thought it would be straight forward but the connections in the new fitting are yellow and green and blue and brown. there are four spaces on the junction box on the new light fitting with one space spare. any ideas?

thanks

If you know which terminals were connected to which colour wires in the old rose then yes - simply reconnect them in the same combination of L(ive), N(eutral) and ⏚(Earth).

If you don't, then get an electrician or friend who knows what they're doing to come have a look - getting it wrong could result in injury, fire or even death.

Rule #1 of home electrical replacements - never disconnect anything until you are confident you know how to wire the replacement on. Working out which wire does what without being able to reference the old connections is tricky in all but the simplest cases.

Looks like you've got a loop in system with pre-harmonisation wiring colours. If you Google 'loop in system ceiling rose' there's a picture shows you how to connect a new pendant.

Your switch live is the yellow (flagged brown) with permanent live red and neutral black. But if you're not sure better to get an electrician.
