Buy-to-let property supremo sends out eviction notices to 200 tennants

Increased population, more people living alone or in smaller families, social housing demolished and/or sold off & no new building to replace the lost stock.

It was a deliberate plan by the last few governments to raise house prices to benefit property owners at the expense of everybody else.

Demographic change, limiting supply whilst increasing credit, and policy all play a part.

But why have things deteriorated so badly in the last few years. The Tory on C4 news was visibly shocked by what Mr Wilson said tonight when Mr Wilson described a severe crisis in social housing provision. Remember, the likes of the Wilson's were helping plug a gap in provision for quite some time - but not any more. Labour can't be blamed for them pulling out now so what have the coalition done to cause this?

It was abolished because there was a dearth of rented property because no-one was willing to invest in it. You cannot set an artificial limit to the price of something when supply and demand dictate a higher price without recognising the consequences which would be catastrophic. .

They do precisely that in the land of the free.

New York seems to have survived rent controls.

It's been b...y obvious for a decade or two(or more)

The right to buy and preventing Local Authorities to reinvest in Social housing.

Why did Sheffield City Council pull down a load of perfectly serviceable two bedroom council houses on Parson Cross?

Just wondering...

They didn't just pull down 2-beds, they also demolished three beds, as a friend's property was part of the demolition, and their's was a three bed.

The pathfinder programme started by the last Labour government, which was supposed to demolish & replace social housing got cancelled after the demolition phase, in 2011, so they weren't rebuilt. It's a problem that has been building for 25 years+, since they started the sell off of council houses. You can't just blame the current government, but they've made it much worse with the cuts to housing benefit & rebuilding. Added to that it's harder for builders & property developers to get credit to build new homes now, so the private sector is failing too.

The rationale was that rich people were wealthier and had more expensive homes.

So they thought they could improve poor areas by forcing up house prices.

They did this by knocking down houses and creating a housing crisis.

Prescott ought to be forced to sleep rough for a decade for his role in Pathfinder.

If it's the home you're living in, an increase in property prices doesn't make you any richer unless you sell up & move somewhere smaller. It only benefits investors, developers & landlords. There are a lot of people who rent too, it certainly didn't help them.

The original reason for pathfinder, as it was sold to us, was to replace low quality housing with better quality social housing. Demolish & rebuild it better was supposed to be the plan. Of course we all know they never really planned to rebuild anything, they would've secured the funding for it if they did.

They told us when they knocked ours down that there was a surplus of social housing !

They actually thought that they would be able to open up areas besides and amongst council houses that developers would use and that having private houses along side social housing would give people something to aspire to, another crock of the proverbial that we were told.

Well if that was the real reason it did not work because development of these wastelands was very slow, if at all, to get developed and those that were ended up being bought by housing associations ect.

That phrase is on a par with "I was only following orders".

That one too.

End of the day, they have worked and took the risks of buying the properties.. if it was easy going everyone would be doing it, and it is THEIR business, so they can do as they seem fit...
