THERE are unconfirmed reports that the Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe, who will turn 90 next month, has collapsed in Harare.

The Zimbabwe Mail stated that security at the State House had been increased after concerns about the leader's health had been raised.

The paper stated that rumours about Mugabe's collapse had been posted on Facebook by a insider in the ruling Zanu-PF party known as Baba Jukwa.

The reports come at a delicate time for Zimbabwe, with an estimated 2.2 million people at risk of hunger.

If the man who ruined Zimbabwe checks out could there could be a ray of hope for the population, or would it just result in another rigged ballot?

One has to assume that the other fellow can take over now, but what it will result in is a mystery. The number of times I thought an African country had changed for the good and turned out to still be a corrupt, governless mess is ridiculous.

Of course it doesn't help that 'countries' in Africa are based on arbitrary lines drawn up post-colonialism, many way larger than the traditional tribal divisions that existed.

Oh what a shame he can't be tried for crimes against humanity before his demise.

No, as soon as he go's there'll be a power vacuum and an instant civil war.

It's incredibly difficult in such situations to hand power from one person to the next and maintain the status quo - there's usually a few generals who fancy taking over themselves.

It's worked in North Korea and Cuba, but it often does not.

This.

With muslim fundies (Al Qaeda/associates) thrown into it in a big way for good measure, as they do jump onto an African power vaccum like an STD onto the lower clergy.

Less than 1% of Zimbabwe is muslim, so that is not going to happen.

It probably will be unstable for a long time though.
