Why do we give subsidies to some of the most asset-rich people in UK?

Recommended Posts

Farmers.

It is done to protect the countryside. Stupid thread innit.

If that's what he meant we had a thread on that recently. CAP is intended to ensure agricultural output i.e. food. Whether farmers are among the most asset-rich people is a moot point but assets don't put food on the table. Work does and if the farmers' work doesn't pay we all starve.

asset-rich does not mean cash-rich especially those who own land. There are a few very rich people who own a lot of land but the vast majority of land ownership in the UK is very small amounts at a time, which is worth very little and no one would buy it, so worthless to the owner.
