Hospitals dont just treat whites for cancer and leukaemia do they?

Recommended Posts

A black celebrity contestant on Family Fortunes is intending to donate her winnings(if she wins) to an African caribbean leukemia charity, and another black celebrity (Danny John Jules) on Mastermind intended to donate his to some black specific cancer charity.

Aren't black people treated for cancer and leukemia like everyone else, if so why the need for these race-specific charities?

One of the main forms of treatment for leukaemia is a bone marrow transplant. And often the donor has to be from the same race. It was discovered that there was an extremely low amount of Afro-Carribeans donating bone marrow, so a charity was set to work towards increasing the uptake of bone marrow donors from that community.

Can just imagine the outcry if a contestant stated they were going to donate their winnings to a 'white only' charity. Not that there'd be one allowed to exist anyway, anywhere in the world.

In this country it seems a bit superfluous, as everyone gets treated the same irrespective of race or origin.

^^^^^^^ This...

Humans have hundreds of different tissue types - often it's hard enough to find a tissue match within the same race, even with siblings, there's just a 1 in 4 chance of being an exact match (unless you have an identical twin, of course!!!)

The more people on a bone marrow registry, the better chance there is of finding a good match...

Afro-caribbean people have tissue types which aren't often found in caucasian people, so the more afro-caribbeans on the register means there's a better chance of them finding a match..... If there aren't enough volunteering for the usual registries (Anthony Nolan, UK Transplant) then it makes more sense to provide an environment where they will volunteer :) :)

Could donate to pedophiles. They all seem to be white.
