I'd highly recommend both these films, another in a similar vein is the British film Defence of the Realm.

I've heard of Defence of the Realm,  did it get an Oscar nomination?

(I'm an admirer of the guy in your avatar btw😉)

The newspaper investigation is a good idea for a film,  do you know of any more?

In addition to those already mentioned, the obvious one would be All The President's Men. Spotlight is pretty much a homage to it.

There's also State of Play (although the original BBC series is better) as well as Zodiac and the new Keira Knightley film Boston Strangler.

Are we all waiting for films to come out on dvd now,  I can't be bothered going to the cinema these days?

(shall make a note of the films mentioned)

Oh, come on Cressy,

🎵

     Saturday night at the movies,

    Who cares what you see,

When your huggin with your baby,

In the last row of the balcony.

                                                                     🎵

Defence of the Realm is a classy thriller, one of the best from the 1980s. Second only to The Long Good Friday or Stormy Monday.

IIRC it had a great cast of Denholm Elliot and Gabriel Byrne.

It was very low key, however often films which are low key are often better - they rely on good writing and good acting.
