Came across this in my reading this morning. I thought it was interesting. Just sharing and wondered if other heavy weight political posters are intrigued too.

No debates. Just sharing ! Wondering what people's thoughts are on this spectrum when they see it for the first time. :)

Oh, I checked. It is based on this link originally:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_spectrum

Then the note stated the source is from "World Values Survey".

It seems that the WVS is a non-profit researching into societal and political topics.

http://www.worldvaluessurvey.org/

Mission statement:

"Explore people’s values and beliefs, their changes over time and their social and political effects."

It is interesting indeed, as I never knew that these kind of entities exist.

It seems fairly spot on. As the threads that exists on this forum alone actually truly matches more or less the above spectrum ! LOL.

I can see which countries have more traditional values, and which ones are more expressive, and then which ones are more balanced. i.e. work to live. Some are more spiritual and is more superstitious because of the lack of connection to the progression of the society itself. Then there is Britain which is a little bit more vocal and expressive, and this is true as people use this and associate it to the politics. Whereas other countries which are not democratic associate this to religion instead, and this is their governing belief.

It is interesting, though I am surprised that East and West Germany are different countries. It can't be because of age as Serbia and Montenegro are also listen as different countries.

Good find, my first though wasn't surprisingly the anal attention to detail I described above but how I would much rather live in the secular countries than the religious ones.

These are the definitions of the spectrum's radar:

Traditional values emphasize the importance of religion, parent-child ties, deference to authority and traditional family values. People who embrace these values also reject divorce, abortion, euthanasia and suicide. These societies have high levels of national pride and a nationalistic outlook.

Secular-rational values have the opposite preferences to the traditional values. These societies place less emphasis on religion, traditional family values and authority. Divorce, abortion, euthanasia and suicide are seen as relatively acceptable.

Industrialization tends to bring a shift from traditional values to secular-rational ones.

With the rise of the knowledge society, cultural change moves in a new direction. The transition from industrial society to knowledge society is linked to a shift from Survival values to Self-expression values. In knowledge societies, an increasing share of the population has grown up taking survival for granted.

Survival values place emphasis on economic and physical security. It is linked with a relatively ethnocentric outlook and low levels of trust and tolerance.

Self-expression values give high priority to environmental protection, growing tolerance of foreigners, gays and lesbians and gender equality, and rising demands for participation in decision-making in economic and political life.
