Tony Benn Dies.

Recommended Posts

Benn stood down in 2001. The current longest-serving MP is Peter Tapsell who has been an MP since 1966 and for another 5 years before that.

His family probably wins the title of the most generations that were MP's, It started with his grandfather Sir John Williams Benn, his father William Wedgwood Benn, 1st Viscount Stansgate was an MP and his son Hilary is an MP, his grand daughter Emily Benn would have been the fifth generation to become an MP if she had won the East Worthing and Shoreham seat in 2010, she will probably win the safe Labour ward of West Thornton in 2015.

This is everything that is wrong with politics.

Really? One family having four or five generations represented in parliament by one MP each time over a period of decades is everything that is wrong in politics? Worse than corruption, neglect, incompetence, lies and dishonesty? Yeah right.

I agree with Tony on this one.

Blair says 'problem' with career politicians like Ed Miliband

Tony Blair said MPs should work normal jobs before entering politics to give them a better overview of how the world works.

How does a working class person with a view to a political career give them a better overview of the rich and their world..who are equally voters?

I have met Tony several times, well meaning guy but he really doesn't have a clue. Hope he gets well soon.

Sorry to hear that. We could do with a few more Labour MPs with his integrity, but where are they?

Or politicians generally. He's part of a different generation.

He's not a man you can always agree with but his motivations seem a world away from the modern career politician.

I see that The Benn Diaries: 1940-1990 is available for Kindle. Tempting, very tempting....

Benn stood down in 2001.

because he knew he was going to lose his Chesterfield seat. Which would have been the second time he would have lost a safe Labour seat. But he had the sheer gall to attempt to kid everyone that he was doing it because of his 'integrity'.

the man never showed any integrity in his political career at all. A total opportunist. The only reason he ever swung outrageously and unexpectedly to the left after being a right winger in parliamentary Labour party for over twenty years was because he realised it was the only way he was ever going to get anywhere near the leadership. Had he not changed his spots, and moved left, he would have had no chance of getting anywhere near the top of the Labour party. And yet there are still people out there, like him, who are trying to kid that he was a 'man of principle'.
