Pub in chesterfield

Recommended Posts

The way I see it, if the pub was successful and making enough money, somebody would take it on, and it would continue to trade as a pub.

What's likely, is that it was losing money, and wasn't financially viable as a pub.

So, what's left to do? Board it up and leave it to fall into disrepair?

Often it isn't that simple, usually when the pub is leased out by a 'pub company'.

Sometimes there is an issue of the pub company policy of screwing the publican for rent way above the value of the business coupled with contracting them to buy their wet stock from the pub company at inflated prices with restricted choice. Naturally this makes the pub seem unviable.

Other times it is more profitable for the pub company to sell the property to developers rather than leasing it out as a pub.

Either way, the pub could be doing good trade but still be declared not viable and sold off to be converted for retail/residential use or redeveloped.

There is an argument in the case of where a pub is actually valued by the local community as an important facility it should be protected against change of use. There are a number of examples where a pub company has declared a pub unviable, sold it off to an independent operator who have made it successfull. A great example in Sheffield is Shakespeares on Gibralter Street.
