liam1412
A tactical nuke is a very different beast to those that are the concerns of the said doomsdayers though. It's effectively just a posh bomb, not a typical nuke in the mass destruction sense.
tzijlstra
Hit home did it. No it didn't home, I don't get it? Not sure how an ill-construed point can hit home. Btw. Dutch media and the BBC now report that the Ukraine has started operations as well. Apparently the Ukrainian intelligence service has intercepted evidence that the Russian army on the border was preparing to invade. GLASGOWOODS
stop being so dramatic! this will never result in war with the west, leave the baltic countries to find their own levels of occupation, i am sure they will manage to sort it out, maybe even Ukraine will split in two, europe the US , Nato will dare not raise a finger! they can spout economic sanctions rhetoric but in the big picture of Russias future they wont care. the people are speaking in these areas. If Nato turns a blind eye to Russia's ambitions, other Nations (China) will see it as a weakness and a green light for their expansion plans. Germany and Japan did exactly the same pre WW2

Germany and Japan did exactly the same pre WW2 This. People defending Russia in this case underestimate what is going on here, a sovereign state is being invaded through badgeless soldiers and annexed /peacefully/. China can do this to Taiwan now, it will just make sure it looks like most Taiwanese want to be a full part of China and boom it's gone. There are so many of these conflict border zones and misplaced diaspora that it is really just a matter of time for other nations to start feeling around for what they can get away with. ---------- Post added 17-04-2014 at 18:32 ---------- Sounds like they arrived at a reasonable agreement, let's see if it holds. tzijlstra
Beginning to become pretty clear what Putin wants now, if the Ukraine becomes a federation with large autonomy for the different areas he can still count on the East doing what he wants: ensure coal gets sold to Russia's preferred bidders. He'd of course prefer full control, but this has to be a good second. Plus he can continue plotting his megalomaniac project of making the Northern Black Sea into a massive tourist-trap. Don't know how many of you are aware with the concept of Energy Wars but we are headed that way without even seeing it. Iraq was about the oil, this conflict is about the coal, China and Japan are at loggerheads over some stupid island cause they think there is oil, Norway frequently calls NATO meetings to discuss Russian exploitation of Arctic resources etc. etc.
