No car tax ok for some

Recommended Posts

Presumably if the government were massively concerned then they'd do something about it. They obviously aren't that bothered though, so why are you?

Maybe they will be if there's income to be made. It all depends on the cost of the infrastructure or back-end work to recoup the money.

For my stated reason.

The government are not bothered about a lot of things that matter to the general public, that does not mean we should all just accept this

Or maybe like you we should just all lay down and say nothing.

Maybe you should speak to your MP.

If the government aren't bothered though, I expect that the amount of money involved is pretty trivial.

So there is no way that with the HUGH size of HGV fuel tanks and reasonably small size of the UK (most probably make it as far as London) that drivers can't fill there tanks over there and again get a break on all charges in the UK

Noooooooooooo I bet no one has thought of that before :loopy:

Not many motorists enjoy the luxury of having a HUGH (sic) HGV fuel tank. Presumably those that do are in the UK for commercial reasons and many will be travelling beyond London.

Incidentally, as other posters have pointed out, not all roads in Europe are of the toll variety, whereas no one can escape fuel duty if they use a UK fuel pump.

Which does rather imply that we should do away with VED and just add the extra onto fuel duty!

Exempt vehicles can then claim a rebate (if that were considered desirable). Those that drive higher distances or less efficient cars would pay more, those with efficient cars or who drove little would pay less. Entirely fair.

And then we could add the cost of compulsory 3rd party insurance to the fuel duty and do away with the need for insurance (and the ability to avoid having it).

How would you deal with the use of red diesel?

Why would it require any different treatment to now? (If vehicles that use it need tax and/or insurance generally, then add those costs on, but not general fuel duty, make a rebate available for any exceptions to those conditions).

Adding insurance costs to fuel is unworkable and would penalize careful drivers with years of hard earned no claims discounts.
