Have The People Of Britain Been Totally And Utterly Brianwashed..

Recommended Posts

Primark and New Look. I am doing a wardrobe rehauled, and I realised that the 10 pound jeans that I thought was cheap and I bought because it fitted, is actually not set to a specific size, even though they are stated as size 14. There is a lack of workmanship on these kind of items. Primark is also the same as well, with their thin fabric. But to be honest, if I use the same amount of money, which my 4 jeans now could have become one pair of decent 40 pound jeans like the old levi that could have lasted me for say 5 years ? Or more.

I also found that the cards now in M&S are actually of a cheaper quality but the price remained the same.

The same is also of pots and pans. I recently found out that, a Meyer pot that my auntie bought for 40 pounds around 10 years ago is still sturdy, usable, and not scratched in any way. Whereas I have bought cheap products ever since university or these 10 pound pots, or of these 20 pounds for 4 pots, I calculated that I actually have spent more than 150 on pots alone because they don't last ! This is at least over the course of 10+ years, but this definitely shows the workmanship there, and the pricing of things.

Basically in my generation, compared to my mom's, I definitely figured out that quality of goods were better in her generation than mine alone. Maybe it is my own fault for not waiting before buying. So I have to buy cheaper in order to survive. But when I look at the generation below me buying even more cheaper goods from the likes of Tesco Value, you can really see why ?

You haven't figured out that the quality was better, you've figured out that the quality of higher priced items was better than the cheap tat you are buying today. Nothing knew there though, there's a reason you don't have the cheap pans that she bought.

Your rant seems to be all over the place. Can you give any details of the "shoddy goods" you speak of, because I buy wisely and carefully and don't have any problem. Granted I have in the past (especially with Primark trousers that shrink after a few washes), but I've learnt my lesson.

I was more concerned about shoddy service than goods to be honest, try a train journey for one, massively overpriced yet shabby, understaffed, unreliable, overcrowded but we put up with it and if you make complaints your classed as some sort of crank or weirdo, hotel chains are another example.

A poster said that the cost of goods in Spain are higher, are you talking in tourist areas or generrally throughout the country.

I was talking to a couple recently who have lived in Portugal for the last ten years and were on an extended stay over here visiting a sick relative, they expressed total shock at how the cost of supermarket shopping is in comparison.

So what you want to do? Basically regulate private companies to the extent that the Government is basically communist?

Then you'd get no say at all as an electorate because you wouldn't be one.

The way things are is the worst system except for all the rest ;)

Have you any idea what the general level of wealth is in Portugal though? The average income is far lower than here in the UK, so it's hardly surprising that things cost less.

Did you do any research at all before your rant?

Don't confuse communist/capitalist with democratic/autocratic.

There is nothing to stop you having a communist democracy, although you'd probably call it socialist I guess.

Have you ever heard the saying "buy cheap, buy twice"? ;)

Basically in my generation, compared to my mom's, I definitely figured out that quality of goods were better in her generation than mine alone.
For many (most?) things, there was also a lot less choice, and society was much less fashion-oriented/consumerist.

I mean, would your mom have bought a brand new set of kitchenware, small electrics and pans to colour-coordinate every so many years? ;)

Maybe it is my own fault for not waiting before buying
Generally speaking, just this.

It's a principle your mom's generation was expectedly raised with and took for granted.

It's a principle more recent generations have completely forgotten, and one of the root causes of all that is financially wrong in developed economies.

[before you misunderstand my post as an attack, I'm generally agreeing with you, but adding some further thoughts and considerations ;)]

I didn't do any research as if I had typed out a list of cast iron facts that the thread would not have already run to two pages.

Is the disparity from income to cost of goods in Portugal the same as it is in the UK.
