A row over a refreshments bus led to a seaside village losing a multi-million pound trust fund, it has emerged.

Gillian Goddard had intended to leave her shares in a 750 acre estate around Bantham in Devon to the village after her death.

But she was "very upset" over local objections to the estate's decision to let a food bus use the beach car park, her widower revealed.

As a result, Mrs Goddard dropped her plans before she died last November.

He said: "Gill's life's work was to look after Bantham. But one of things people asked for is whether they could get some food or drink on the beach.

"So they introduced a Gastrobus to avoid putting in some great big cafe, because they thought it would be environmentally friendly."

He said the idea for the Gastrobus "provoked an enormous reaction" from a "small number of villagers" who objected to commercialisation of the area.

Nick Grodhunce, one of the opponents of the Gastrobus, said he was "saddened" that the trust fund had been dropped by Mrs Goddard.

He said: "Both Tony and Gilly did a huge amount of work to preserve what we have here and it is to their credit.

"It is sad but my personal opinion is that the community people have clearly stated that they want to preserve whatever Evans Estates said should be preserved."

The Bantham estate is due to be marketed in May. There has been no official reason given for the sale.

A number of residents have raised concerns about losing their tenancies.

So after a pathetic objection to a simple food bus these people have lost out on a trust fund of millions and now face the possibility of loosing their tennancy.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you :huh:

I suppose there's another way of looking at it
Don't bother in this case...

Why should a wealthy woman dictate to a village what it has on its beach (presuming a majority were against the gastrobus)?
...because she/her family owned them (the village and the beach).

I'd call it Karma, after a fashion :D

I think she was a part owner of the beach. She wasn't dictating-she withdrew a charitable offer because the terms under which she was prepared to leave the estate weren't acceptable to her.

Well that just illustrates the perils of serfdom! Do as I say or you will be made homeless ... in this day and age? Tony Benn would have had something to say ...

She said nothing about being homeless, all she was trying to do was provide a place for people to get some food and drink.

They kicked off and hassled the frail old woman so she decided maybe they weren't the best people to leave her estate to.

I'd object to a "gastrobus" too! Why not a fish and chip van, or an ice cream van?

because Devon I guess :D

I think it is such a shame, and those who live there isn't appreciating the areas and what it is for, isn't it ? Since it is her family that owned the land and has been there for generation, then shouldn't those who live there think twice about how their livelihood will be ? Maybe this is not truly being seen.

If the estate goes on market, who knows what will happen now ? Let it be fluctuated against market pricing and be done with.

Sometimes I read these kind of stories and is quite amazed at how the country really is. It is quite generous and nice of her to leave the money to maintain a village. But she is being a bit mean in this instance too.

Would you leave that amount to a bunch of people who didn't share your views?

Would you leave anything, especially as many of them are only renting.

In her eyes she just wanted to provide refreshments to visitors, these people clearly objected as they selfishly wanted to keep the place to themselves.

Who's being mean again??
