Super Hans
I work in a department store and my boss once told me as a general rule products are marked up by c70%. The food industry may be different but that still gives you a bit of context. If you buy a duvet for £100, the shop bought it for between £20 - £30. Varies from product to product though, you get people who pay £10 for a wine glass which they probably buy in for less than £1. Glassware is dirt cheap. In a bottle of wine, the bottle is the 'free' bit...yet you'll get people paying £50 for a vase that's about the same size and shape as a wine bottle and costs about the same to make, i.e. practically nothing. As I say though, food is different, I'm sure I read somewhere that those salad bags you can buy in supermarkets are marked up by about 200% - though this reflects the short shelf life and the amount of it they have to throw away. At the end of the day though it costs what it costs, transportation, staff, ingredients, production all costs money.
