Silly me!  I thought we were being sold the idea that journey times would be improved.  If it's down to capacity, then spen the money lengthening existing platforms, where possible, & put on longer trains.

Not always possible - and it seems daft to build a new railway line using 1980s technology. And they were building for many years down the line (no pun intended) when the population would have been higher still.

Not a problem now of course  - us simple northern folk don't need it! Crossrail2 though - vital.

It was about capacity, not speed.

Was it? All I ever heard was the 20 minutes it would save. I always thought it was a waste.

A decent rail link across the pennines East to West, coast to coast, on the other hand is absolutely essential.. They say it's too expensive because of the tunnelling, (not that that stopped them in London...) but there's already a tunnel under the Pennines that could be expanded and used.

Just more excuses. So much for levelling up the North....

You weren't listening then carefully enough. Admittedly, the media did focus on improved journey times but increased capacity always seemed to be mentioned to me.

I agree an East-West link is more important to the North but we should still have both. The cost of tunnelling shouldn't be a barrier but the existing tunnel is not suitable and is in the wrong place.

There have been so many false promises about improving northern transport infrastructure that until they actually build them I won't believe any of it is going to happen.
