Its what we kids called the tunnel behind the church at the bottom of prince of wales road very scary and very dark with rats. When I was told that the gas produced in it used to power the beautiful old gas lamp at the bottom of Handsworth Hill I was glad none of us smoked. Begs the questions 1 Did it produce methane to power the light. 2 Whatever happened to that lamp, probably only removed in the last 25 years for the alterations at the Prince of Wales Road junction.
