ccit
Entree is right - the correct name is Mothering Sunday. A much more apt description because there are many people (men included) who can be said to fulfil the mothering role. The original meaning way back in 16century was that it was a day when folk returned to their "mother"church where they were baptised. The servants were given a day off to travel there and then visit their families and show off baking skills by taking a simnel cake to their mothers. It is always the fourth Sunday of Lent and so it was also a day when Lent was ignored and families could enjoy themselves. It has become commercialised and called Mothers Day by Americans, card companies and florists. Happy Mothering Sunday to all who mother and nurture another person. scousemouse
My Mum died in 1980, and I still find today a difficult day. Even after all these years I walk swiftly past all the cards for Mothering Sunday.
