English and Proud?

Recommended Posts

So what sort of reaction did you imagine you'd get when you tell people your English, and you do know that the majority of people here are also English?

I don't say I'm English unless I'm asked or have to put it on a form.

I'm English, so what?

Why is it that it's OK to say you're Scottish, Welsh or irish (or any other country for that matter) but say you're English not British and you MUST be a xenophobe or racist? I put English as my nationality on forms but always feel a bit worried that it will make me look like I'm a BNP supporter or something. I want to be proud to be English, but feel I can't. I can be English first and British second can't I? Anyone else feel like this?

These days, if you say you're English, you can be arrested and thrown in jail!

These days you can be arrested and put in prison just for saying you're English. You can you know. Just for saying you're English, these days you can.... be arrested and put in prison (Stewart Lee 2014)
