Dreb48 Posted May 9, 2014 Share Posted May 9, 2014 Hi maggie. I can tell you for sure it was a Co-op in the early 50s and I imagine some time before that. In those days it had 3 separate shops. Grocers, Butchers and Greengrocers all in the one building. Sawdust on the floor, loose biscuits in tins, butter in a slab, bacon slicer. Yes all the stuff that Co-ops were in those days. jackanne Posted July 31, 2014 Share Posted July 31, 2014 You can see by the design of the building that it was built as a co-op,one thing most of co-ops built in this period had was a door on the upper floor and a hoist to take in deliveries,this was still being used in mid 80s when i delivered there,it is on right hand side of building at rear. The parade of shops where post office is was originally built as a row of cottages to house foremen and there families during the construction of totley tunnel,which started in 1888.It was known as brickie row, Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
