Your characterisation of Labour / Conservatives is way wide of the mark Anna. The difference that has emerged in the last few years is one of authoritarianism / libertarianism. Given a choice I choose libertarianism regardless of the party, but the only choice at the moment is the Conservatives who are moving rapidly into the space that I have always preferred. Until Labour begin to focus on individuals instead of groups I can't find it in me to support them as a party.

Personally I would like to see less politics, not more cross party politics. Fewer politicians, not more.

Like Anna I think the authoritarian / libertarian characterisation of political parties and ideologies is an over simplification.

Notwithstanding, earlier this year the Queen Mary University of London conducted a study into the attitudes of the grass roots of political parties and found that Tories have more authoritarian attitudes to issues such as compliance with authority, social issues such as attitudes to homosexuality, censorship and law & order.

That's not really a new fact, surely? The name 'Conservative' suggests precisely what the survey found!

Except that claiming the Conservatives are 'Libertarians' suggests the opposite.

Neither are Labour 'Authoritarians'

That's the trouble with labels.

Good question. How about the family taking care of their family members first?

I believe that my family are my concern, not the goverment's. You might agree, many think that the government should always be responsible. I don't. Safety nets should be available as a last resort or in extremis.

And yes I agree that the Conservatives are moving to the left to win votes. They are able to do so because Labour have moved further to the left and left a space around society. They are still struggling with it and I wonder whether they are going too far and becoming too authoritarian.

Of course I agree that families' should look after their own. Who would say otherwise?

However we were talking about 'Social concerns,' which is a much bigger picture and has to be the concern of government surely? The Tories seem to dismiss Social concerns whereas Labour intend to deal with them.

I don't see that as 'Authoritarian,' I see it as caring.

Well surely then , that backfires on all those that post on here , that say the mainstream media only report the bad things about Jeremy and his beliefs

Not seen anything much in the media about Jeremy lately. -Well, I suppose it makes a change from seeing him constantly slagged off. Never seen anything good about him though, and when they need a Labour person for 'political balance' on shows, they always seem to get mischief making Blairites on, even when they're no longer in office. Alistair Canmpbell last week for example! Tony seems to be on TV more often than Jeremy. All Yesterday's men. Labour has moved on. But where are the Owen Jones types (good communicator, that one) to explain Labour policies when you need them? Not invited, that's where.

Meanwhile Theresa May is still getting a favourable press, in spite of her, and her team of total incompetants cocking up one thing after another. I don't think I can remember a worse government.

Good press, Therasa May, you must be joking. Everything she does is a joke, the press would struggle to make anything she did look good.
