IQ tests 'do not reflect intelligence'

IQ tests are misleading because they do not accurately reflect intelligence, according to a study which found that a minimum of three different exams are needed to measure someone's brainpower.

I tend to think that someone’s actual intelligence is inversely proportional to how much they boast about their IQ..

Even if IQ tests weren't flawed as described in that article, they'd still only offer a vague correlation with intelligence. The tests they contain are the sort of problems you get better at the more familiar you are with them - your brain begins to recognise patterns in the tests which makes subsequent ones easier (like sudoku or chess). That's before you get to cultural things that affect the results - anyone who played a lot with LEGO will find the spacial reasoning tests easier.

It's worth noting from that article:

But people who regularly played computer games scored significantly higher in reasoning and short-term memory tests, while smokers and anxiety sufferers had weaker short-term memory scores.

So even that new test isn't that good a predictor of intelligence.

Labour has asked the BBC for unseen footage of last week’s Question Time and demanded a correction during next week’s episode as a row over the show’s treatment of Diane Abbott deepened.

The party has made a formal complaint to the broadcaster over what it called the “unacceptable” treatment of Ms Abbott, the shadow home secretary.

The Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP was interrupted twice as many times as the Conservative MP on the panel, justice minister Rory Stewart, according to Labour.

The show’s new host, Fiona Bruce, is also reported to have made a joke during the warm-up, part of which implied Ms Abbott had been given her shadow cabinet role because of her past relationship with Jeremy Corbyn. The BBC refused to confirm or deny the claim.

I've just watched this episode to see what the fuss was about. I didn't think Dian Abbot was treated badly by Fiona Bruce. When she did interrupt her it was usually to say that DA was repeating herself.

Great source.

Elite organisation? Rather like the public school she sent her children to, then.

Don't forget Diane went to a grammar school herself.

Re: Mensa; an IQ of 130 doesn't mean you'd be accepted. You need to be in the top 98th percentile which doesn't mean an IQ of 130 as the lowest IQ of that percentile is likely to change over time.

There are also differently weighted measures applied to the score on entry tests.

OK, let us reduce this to a simple question.

Do the majority of the population of the UK support leaving the EU.

Simple answer, yes or no?

Yes, as shown by every poll conducted over the last two years.

So when its the referendum result (you know the one vote that mattered) you dispute the result by manipulating the figures to include everyone in the country, including those who dont vote or didnt vote but were eligible

But you try to use a small sample (in comparison to the referendum) as basis to back your point?

Back to Labour, nice to see saint Jez has actually put a stick in the sand to back a 2nd referendum vote in the HOC.

Not sure what the question would be though
