I joined Davy Utd in the late 60s as editor of the Davy Ashmore group newspaper based in the publicity department. The manager was Richard Smith and I well remember Ruby, his secretary, Sue and Diane. Jock Boswell was also in the department with Jim the works photographer and Jill who used to process my films.

Davy Ashmore group had works and offices throughout the country - Glasgow, Gateshead, Stockton on Tees, Hull, Bedford, London and Poole. I visited all these finding stories and feature acticles for the newspaper. I must have been in every department in every works!

The sports club at Darnall was furnished with antiques chosen by the chairman, Maurice Fiennes' wife. There were pantomines every year put on by the amateur dramatic society - I still have copies of the newspaper and look at them occasionally - sad, I know! I covered retirements, retired employees trips, sports events, social events but sadly a member of the group Power Gas from Stockton lost a large amount of money on a contract to build an oil refinery at Immingham. Sadly I then had to leave before being made redundant. It was the best firm and best job I have ever had with great people and good management which is more than can be said for the firm I went to which was T W Ward!

You started the same time as me. I remember well the Power Gas Scenario, it cost Davy's dearly and cost Maurice Fiennes his job too. Never to be the same again.

Yes, Maurice Fiennes resigned. He used to go into the works at Christmas and wish Merry Christmas to the men working the machines. They were somewhat startled I think as many hadn't the foggiest who he was!

Office parties got banned when locking up, a woman was found in one of the toilets, quite drunk. If she hadn't been found she would probably have been there over Christmas!

I won the Camera club trophy on a couple of occasions and I still have the tankards and the prints that won.

I remember Maurice Fiennes touring the shop floor at Christmas. Once he'd shook hands you could go home and was paid to the end of the shift. Resigned is being polite. He was met at the Security gate, relieved of his car, escorted to his office then taken home. I can remember working at his home "Bowshaw" rigging up the barn for his daughters 21st, some party that was. Power Gas dropped one and the group paid for it.

Sir Maurice Alberic Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes. What a mouthful. :)

Ralph and Joseph Fiennes are his grandsons.

Can anyone tell me the status of Davy United at Darnall. I worked for the Instument subsidiary for a while when it was known as Davy Ashmore

I think rather that let it fall to bits I reckon it would make a good luxury hotel for top VIPs visiting the city it's near the arena and all the stars who come To the arena it will also create many jobss for the area. As for the statue I have pasted ther many thousands of times and sween the statue but never. Known what I'd called

I've posted before but just thought I would ask again - does anyone remember and know what happened to Roy Broughton - he was a mate of my father who worked in the drawing office and the estimating department. He would be in his 80s I think.

Davy Ashmore were taken over by Kaverner Engineering (Dutch?),

they had financial problems and abandoned Darnall. The building is now to let but I don't know if anyone is renting it yet.

Incidentally the sports club is still going.

yer I go past the sports club nearly very day, I never worked at davey unitedbut my mate did we were only 17 d we old go to the club a few times a week were we used to play in the bowling alley down stairs it was only a small alley with fewer pins than a proper alley but fun any way wonder if it's still there
