alchresearch
BBC weather woman this morning talking about "celebrating" D-day. She had to be politely informed by the person she was interviewing that it was "commemorating".

Waldo
There were soldiers of various faiths on both sides, so what. Let's remember the good brave soldiers regardless of their faith. Let's be broader than that, and remember the good brave soldiers regardless of all artificial distinction made by men, such as nationality, faith, race, social class. I would like to see Germany and German veterans, also included in todays proceedings. Why does that not happen? Are we not all friends now? Germany is included, Angela Merkel is present and I believe there have been German veterans involved for a long time now, although I struggle to back that claim up as I don't have time to google it, but fairly sure of it. Here is one story remembering the German side of the story. This event and the war is firmly embedded in the conscience of those that were liberated. It is easy to forget but in Germany itself there were plenty of people that did not support the Nazi's and the war. Hundreds of thousands of 'rebels' saved the lives of thousands of Jewish families and organised resistance by providing honest recounts of battles, flying in the face of propaganda. Stan Tamudo
This is just through on the BBC website. 14:50: "Police say an 89-year-old British D-Day veteran who went missing after being told by care home staff that he could not attend the anniversary commemorations has been found - in Normandy. The man, who has not been named, was reported missing from a care home in Hove on Thursday. It is believed he went out wearing his war medals under a raincoat. Police say they have spoken to the man and are satisfied he is safe and able to return to Hove once the D-Day commemorations are complete". Brilliant stuff. Yeah and there was a story a few years ago where a veteran got lost on his way back to the ferry port. Ended up a few miles inland. Went to the local police station. They saw him with all his medals etc, realised why he was there and gave him a motorcycle escort with blues & twos to the dockside... well cool:)
Bypassblade
As Dobby and others have said, we owe these people so, so much not just from D Day but also 2 World Wars. May they never be forgotten.
wornout53
Every man lost regardless of which side they were on or what their beliefs was someone's son/brother/father. The veterans are getting less by the year but we must never allow them or their fallen comrades to be forgotten.

erebus
And the USA continues to fight wars all over the globe since WW2, so in a sense America is the new liberator, considers itself to be exceptional. so the rest of are not exceptional, although I seem to remember this sort of talk being spokes by someone or other in the past, but cannot put my finger on it. Without the 27 million dead Russians, who died fighting in a war of attrition, the world would be a very different place today. As you know Putin's brother died in Stalingrad of starvation and father a casualty of fighting the Nazis, he is well aware of the waste war creates. Every Russian family contributed to the 27 million and they have never forgotten the effect of war. It seems we have learned nothing, as the optimism after the war for a better future has now created 5 million children in poverty, and 1 million or more living off food banks, the modern version of soup kitchens. This is what we fought for in WW2, to become slaves of the financial industry?
