*_ash_*
Rik Mayall was like a British Jim Carey; the performance he put in in Drop Dead Fred was very Ace Ventura/The Mask-esque. He could have been more famous in America than he actually was, but I'm glad he wasn't in a way because we got to keep him. ---------- Post added 10-06-2014 at 12:03 ---------- yeah that was funny. Another episode that stands out for me was the one where they were "looking after" the shop, but ended up watching cricket on the roof! Both good episodes, I like the dating agency one too
denlin
So did I, Alan B'Stard reminds me of one or two on here as well. "We hear an awful lot of leftie whingeing about NHS waiting lists. Well the answer's simple. Shut down the health service. Result? No more waiting lists. You see, in the good old days, you were poor, you got ill and you died. And yet these days people seem to think they've got some sort of God-given right to be cured. And what is the result of this sloppy socialist thinking? More poor people. In contrast, my policies would eradicate poor people, thereby eliminating poverty. And they say that we Conservatives have no heart". Thanks for making me laugh a lot Rik. Yes and he was a lifelong Socialist.
Guest
Damn shame. I'll always remember him as Alan B'Stard. He captured the slimy, sadistic Tory arrogance perfectly. And as Flashheart, too, of course, devouring the scenery and absolutely stealing the show. The writing was excellent, naturally, but his charismatic, energetic, rude and gleefully sleazy delivery stole the show. I love this clip. You can tell Hugh Laurie is desperately trying not to laugh. He was superb as Flashheart and you are right it was the perfect combination of good writing and amazing delivery that just worked so well used to love the episodes he was in it made an already good show even better. Reminds me of a similar character in mash called colnel flagg who every time he appeared totally stole the shiow.
Bypassblade
Both good episodes, I like the dating agency one too Drop Dead Fred was made in 91, Pet Detective 94 so Carey copied him, the best episode for me of Bottom is when they go Trick or Treating. Eddie Hitler has the electronic cattle prod & Rik Sh***s himself each time it's used on him, hilarious.

Bypassblade
lol Jim Davidson representing the other side of British comedy. The unfunny side. When you think about it he became popular in the era of "catchphrases" , nick nick was his, "pigging hell" was Bobby Balls.
Daven
The latest reports suggest he had suffered fits since his brain injury and his death could have been the result of an extended fit. Sad news.
