As a comedy actor he was a force of nature. There was a huge amount of talent involved in Blackadder and he blew them all away whenever he appeared.

He was a terrific but under used serious actor as well. Try and see Rik Mayall presents, especially Dancing Queen.

although the post mortem was inconclusive? Oo

Post mortem investigations can only show certain things.

For instance, if you have no prior heart problems and die from an MI or sudden arrhythmia there is likely to be nothing to see at all (apart from possible blood panel results) because you aren't alive for long enough to show the muscle death/scarring which is caused by an MI. If, on the other hand, you survive one MI then that will leave a scar which is visible on any future investigation.

In a lot of instances the decision about whether someone died of a cardiac event is made by excluding everything else and then looking to see if the risk factors for an MI are there- history, recent medical tests, state of the cardiac blood vessels and arteries.

If there's literally nothing else to show a cause of death and it wasn't a stroke or a brain haemorrhage (both easy to exclude on post mortem) or one of the other potential natural causes and there's no reason to think that there was anything sinister involved then a cardiac event is the most likely reason.

A toxicity and blood panel may show something, but it's not very likely and in this instance there's nothing to suggest that Mr Mayall took an overdose or anything like that.

Ref Blackadder my thoughts exactly, you kind of wanted him to have more lines than the rest, and that's saying something with the likes of Stephen fry and company in the room!
