Guest
I don't know why Sheffield was chosen, but I do know that Its only been at the Crucible since 1977. Get ready for the Google genius's to tell us the answer as to why its held in Sheffield.

blake
what happened/the vision was that more people were starting to get colour televisions, in their houses.

heavenlyarts
It was the thrust stage at the crucible that they came for, it's still a unique venue from that perspective.
pattricia
Before The Crucible was built it was staged at a pub in Sheffield, so this was a natural move to there.
blake
the World Snooker Championship was held in a variety of locations before Sheffield, all of them I tihnk, were in England even though many of the best snooker players, were not English. The previous tournament to the initial Sheffield tournament, the 1976 one, was in Middlesbrough.
Alcoblog
If the table is perfectly level in the Crucible (53°22'51.81"N ... 1°28'00.43"W), then to move it anywhere else, taking into consideration the curvature of the Earth, it would be at an angle and all the balls would roll to one cushion, or, in a worst case scenario, could actually roll completely off the table and cause significant damage to the oche.
