Sheffield freedom ride pensioners

Recommended Posts

Yes, if it improves public services.

and you can't really dismiss the bus-travelling public as "a few people."

The poster is not dismissing the bus travelling public (like me for example) as a few people. He is simply on about those who are protesting and want to get on for next to nowt rather than paying the normal fare like the rest of us.

Sheffield council should never have allowed the buses to be run by private company's.

When they were ran by the council there were more of them, very cheap fares (less need for cars) and pensioners went free after 9.30am.

People got out more, stayed fitter (especially children) less strain on the health service.

I guess some would call how things are now "progress"

That wasnt their decision, it was forced through by the bitch thatcher

I don't think it was the Council's decision. A central government decree IIRC.

Everyone had to change, I think, except London.

A mistake in my opinion. I don't mind who operates the buses, but I think cities would be better off if buses were to be heavily subsidized, so they were free or nearly free at the point of use. Many people with cars would see little point in using their cars for commuting, making the roads better for everyone, including those who wish to continue to drive. But this is the subject for a different thread

Yes, curious that isnt it? Its as if the bitch thatcher KNEW that it was a load of crap and didnt want london destroyed like the rest of the country. After all if somethings brilliant london gets it and the rest can get stuffed and if its crap london is saved from it

This thread is about the freeloaders wanting free train travel not public transport subsidies par-see. I for one would have a major problem with paying more ANYWHERE so that a small amount of freeloading pensioners can go to leeds for nowt

Most of the buses I see during the day are far from full...

...and this is the problem. The less people that want to use buses, then the less buses are provided, so the service doesn't meet people's needs, so people find other means of travelling so even less people use the buses, and so it goes on. We finish up with more and more cars on the roads, causing even more congestion. So we have to build more roads at inordinate cost, but we still waste hours of our lives queuing on roads. But the opposite could be achieved.

We see education, NHS, street lighting, fire fighting, pavements to walk on, libraries, social services, etc etc as services which are funded centrally, for the good of all. Why not public transport also? If a lot of people were enticed to leave their cars at home and travel by bus or train, those who remain in their cars would find their journeys easier and quicker. The country as a whole could reduce road building costs, as fewer cars would be on them.

Nice to give BTP and Northern advance warning so they can throw up some ticket barriers :D

Barnsley group wants free train travel to Leeds.

-They already have free bus travel when others in their sixties don't.

-They already have 50% off on SY trains.

-They already can have 33% off train travel.

-next time it could be YOU! that has to pay for their free train trips to Leeds.

-next time it could be YOU! that has to lose bus services to pay for their free train trips to Leeds.

-next time it could be YOU! a parent of a young family that has to pay 100% more to pay for buses for their free train trips to Leeds.

Well said!

In no way do I object some of my tax and/or money I spend on public transport being spent to increase the independence and reduce financial burden of the elderly and disabled but this group has gone too far with their desire for free train travel regardless of the consequences for other people.

I really hope SYPTE don't cave to their demands, i fact I'd be happy if all those protesting had their passes confiscated for not appreciating the benefits they have already.

I actually work in Barnsley (and get there from Sheffield on public transport) and while it's highly unlikely I will be around the station at 11am (too busy working), if I do find myself in the vicinity, I'll be supporting Northern Rail and the BTP more than the protesters.

:) :) :) I'd say half price rail travel is better than full price so time they stopped being greedy and selfish and accepted what they have got.

Who are these people protesting against?

Is it Northern Rail who are a commercial company set up to make a profit, who also receive a subsidy to allow them to provide a level of service which would possibly not be viable otherwise?

Does the subsidy not come from SYPTE who have withdrawn it.

If so, shouldn't the protestors be outside the SYPTE offices?

Oh wait a minute isn't that in Sheffield?

Ah well they will just have to catch the 265 to Sheffield and spend the day there instead.

I think it's high time BTP invested in some water cannons. Not only would this stop the protests but it might stop the station stinking of urine once the manky old pensioners have been there!
