Still cant work out how its costing an "extra" £14.80 each though.

Walk up fares instead of pre-booking? Going by the scenic route? First class? or all of the above.

Most of the pensioners who are "protesting" in Barnsley are, no doubt, ex miners who decimated their industry by striking for "their rights" thus giving the Government of the day carte blanche to shut all the pits. I know of many ex miners who took a very handsome redundancy payment in 1985 ( some were pretty young then) and are still very financialy well off having not worked since. So fast forward 30 years and they are still trying to enforce their will on the majority, hopefully this time they will not win and thus all pensioners will continue to enjoy a certain level of subsidised travel.

Northern dont offer "first class" fares. So no. Even the walk up fare to Leeds (or between any two points in South Yorkshire) isnt double the amount being quoted above and if multiple journeys are being undertaken within South Yorks, a Day Ranger ticket is cheaper than £14.80.

Who are these people protesting against?

Is it Northern Rail who are a commercial company set up to make a profit, who also receive a subsidy to allow them to provide a level of service which would possibly not be viable otherwise?

Does the subsidy not come from SYPTE who have withdrawn it.

If so, shouldn't the protestors be outside the SYPTE offices?

Oh wait a minute isn't that in Sheffield?

Ah well they will just have to catch the 265 to Sheffield and spend the day there instead.

They have come from the Occupy Sheffield school of protesting :)

I joined this thread to object to all pensioners being referred to as "manky old pensioners smelling of urine". We are an independent local group who gets no external funding so our members pay for everything, room rent, speakers visits etc. Many of our members are on basic pension and have very little spare money so when costs increase it makes life very difficult for some.

Our group did the planning for the year ahead months ago, everyone needs to budget and that is how we arranged our members funding. When we discovered that rail travel was to be withdrawn rearrangement of many of our planned visits was made, where they could be, some could not be rearranged. This weeks visit is one of those and some of our members have had to cancel because they can not afford to go. As for people saying that nothing costs £14.80 can I ask them to visit http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ the cheapest return fare for our route is quoted at £14.80.

We are not freeloaders and never have tried to avoid paying, just a group trying to keep fit, healthy and trying to keep the remaining gray cells working, we also try to remain continent while on the train or station.

Err, no, thats not quite what I said. What is your journey, please? How can we look it up if we dont know what it is? You are aware that the pass a few months ago only gave you free train travel within South Yorkshire and on certain trains to Leeds, dont you?

We can then compare how much it would cost then and how much it would cost now. I am quite sure the "extra" you are going to have to pay will NOT be £14.80.

Wakefield is quoted at £14.80 return from our local station.

"Retirement" should be abolished with immediate effect and all benefits of every kind should be terminated this very second.

If you become too old to work or unable to work through illness, be it physical or mental, then you are a drain on the state and people's "hard earned" taxes!

This can be cured at a stroke by opening compulsory euthanasia establishments.

An added benefit is the undoubted fact that many of the contributors to this thread would then have bugger all to indulge their trolling over!

Having said that, there are a few who would find it necessary to invent something, as it's presumably the only gleam of light in their soulless existence!

"extra" £14.80 each

For over 60s

£5.90 Sheffield to Leeds return.

As it was planned so far in advance train tickets booked at the time of the withdrawal could have been £5.90 or £11.00 first class Sheffield to Leeds return.

£11.40 anywhere in SY( bus tram train) to Leeds return via Moorthorpe (9.15 ex Sheffield)or Darton (9.06 ex Sheffield) before then- £12.80.

£12.80 anywhere in SY ( bus tram train)to Leeds return after 09.33 (£14.30 before) via Barnsley on trains that do not stop at Darton.

£5.30 off peak or £6.80 Barnsley Leeds return.
