Sheffield pride 2014

Surprisingly if you walked around Sheffield Centre, unaware there was an event on Devonshire Green, you would have been none the wiser !

This is always the same in Sheffield.

Although I wouldn't have wanted to attend this event particularly, I am always seeing pictures of events on facebook after they have happened. Do the council (or organisers) only advertise these things on radio hallam and look north ?

I don't have a TV and I don't listen to trash radio. Maybe these events should be advertised on local internet forums and facebook.

If that happened there might be more people turning up because they have heard that it exists.

If nobody has heard that an event is being planned they don't have the chance to go.

I very much doubt the numbers are anything to do with London Pride.

The numbers are down by around 800 on past year, I doubt even 50 people chose London over Sheffield, it's not as if its local & people just can not afford London. But in reality they should have never clashed anyway.

The numbers was down because the entertainment that was on the schedule was not good enough. If there was a big enough headline act, then I suspect the numbers would have been similar to 2013.

Also anyone that says pride is about pride & not a music festival is just lol, 99% of people give no care to the pride aspect & are simply around that day/night for a good day/night with no emphasis on Pride.

Well you guys may accept gay people as a fact of life and wonder what the fuss is about, sadly not everyone shares your commendable attitude.

Esme I do say for the greater part they are accepted, but there are still some that don't you get Neanderthals in all walks of life dear.

People get beat up for religion, colour, sexual orientation, wearing the wrong football shirt, we need to eradicate these morons then we may get stability.

The attacks you mention at length, none were in our fair city, unless I've read it wrong.

I have been going to Pride events for just over 25 years and mostly people go to dress up, have a laugh, drink, dance and watch some entertainment, very few (sadly) go to make a political statement or call for respect and dignity and as for the supposed "gay community" what community ??? in Sheffield bars don't work together, very few social groups to join, bitching and backstabbing (and that's just on SF) older people made to feel not welcome in bars, no variety in bars, some women don't want men some men don't want women. Sheffield LGBT just has not got its act together and I have been out in Sheffield for 30 years, it never has been as great place to be gay. Pride, give me something to be proud of Sheffield.

The SYP link at the end shows attacks in Sheffield up to 2012, only gives numbers not details though.

Whilst in no way ashamed of their sexuality, the gay people i know think these events have become.....well.....a bit gay.

Bar the real dedicated knuckle draggers amongst us (who'll never change their outdated views btw) no-one really gives a **** about anyone's sexuality any more. Do they ?

Agreed, most people these days just use Pride as a way to socialise, have a laugh and get drunk. There is very little political or social justice elements to Pride these days, and in many ways no need for it. Homophobes and bigots will always be that way. It always use to make me laugh when people were doing Pride marches and events and yet they were NOT out to family or friends. Why not just admit Pride is a GREAT day out and a good p...s up for the majority of people and enjoy it (if organised correctly).

I agree, wont pay £10 to see a bunch of no bodies on stage and have NO CHOICE but to buy the over priced food and drinks inside the Pride zone. Rip off. Leeds pride is in the city centre as is FREE, with people you have heard of on stage and you can take a few cans etc.

I think that is part of the problem with the acts, I saw the list and went "who are these", maybe the SPC (sheff pride committee) aimed for acts to attract the younger population, as the older more mature people wont have heard of them, or maybe the artists were "cheap".

Less said about the Pride March the better, what a shambles, set off 10 minutes late due to no floats arriving. Yes the walk was longer but not many people in it, waste of police time, this really needs better organising next year, it would be nice to have the Sheffield gay bars take part in the march, a bit of advertising for them.

I went to Leeds pride last year and there is no comparison at all.

I thought it was Sheffield Pride not a music festival?

If it were the latter you could complain about the acts. I suspect Leeds council either partially funds or the bars that are grouped together contribute towards the day....

I do know that the Viaduct bar do a collection for the event and they make this last for months, such a good way to raise funds.

Maybe Sheffield gay bars should do the same, have collection tins in each pub so people can contribute throughout the year.

Now I was sat in a pub whilst the event was on in West Street and I overheard a couple of people talking about Devonshire Green and saying what was going on, someone thought it was "Peace in the Park", whatever that is, they didn't know it was Sheffield Pride. The people on the next table overheard and they didn't know either.

maybe the black bin bag effect round the 3 sides threw them off, who knows.

Leeds Gay Bars have so far raised £12,000+ for Pride, I wonder how much Sheffield bars raised ? Let's be truthful, the Sheffield scene and everything that goes with it (Pride etc) have been crap for years. Myself and 5 other guys from Sheffield didn't do Sheffield Pride but we are all off to Leeds Pride.

It seems to be turning into a music festival, which is a shame.

The venue is in the wrong place, why move to a smaller venue anyway, very confusing, or is the Devonshire Green - the "place to have music festivals".

There are loads of parks where this even can be held.

I am guessing they raised no where near that, or even contributed anything, only the pride committee know this answer.

I didn't go either, and I know a lot who didn't go to the Devonshire Green.

Enjoy Leeds :)
