Electric chiller/cool box off the mains

Recommended Posts

I am interested in getting a chiller/cool box like this :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Campingaz-Powerbox-Classic-Thermo-Electric/dp/B000Y8QF16/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404982682&sr=8-1&keywords=electric+chiller+cool+box

this one runs off a car battery cigarette lighter. Can I get it, and if I can how can I get this or a similar kind of cool box, to run off the mains?:

The answer is in the advert

"Can be used in 230Vac mode with an 230Vac/12Vdc transformer (sold separately)"

and if you follow the links on the ad.

so I can plug the chiller into the transformer and the transformer into the mains.

£70 is quite expensive also I will be using it in a hot climate, it says it will only lower the temperature inside the box 16 degrees celsius below what it is outside, so if that is true, it will only be about 15 degrees celsius inside the box. That is not a fridge.

You need to spend a bit more for better performance..it's a cool box not really a fridge..

It is a cool box, if you want a small fridge there are many on the market and if you intend to use it overseas buy locally. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Caldura-litre-Compact-Fridge-White/dp/B004DVVSKI/ref=sr_1_4?s=appliances&ie=UTF8&qid=1404986414&sr=1-4

thanks for these replies, I think it is not going to fly.

I'll just have a coolbox and keep loading it with ice which you can buy there quite easily usually and very cheaply. I might even bring a cool box on the plane as check in luggage. I imagine they will let them on to the baggage carousel. I noticed that, unlike ice, cool boxes are not that cheap in the shops there compared to here when I went there before. I might as well bring my own cool box. I have used cool bags there before but cool bags are nowhere near as good as cool boxes.

I bought one from Halfords a couple of weeks ago. It's 24L capacity and was £50 plus £10 for the mains adaptor. They also had 14L and 40L but I can't remember those prices.

Why not combine the two ideas and have the powered cooler and still put freezer blocks in? Should be fridgesque then.

Correct, it's not a fridge. You could get a proper fridge for that.

It's more for keeping your already cold drinks cool in the car on trips out, a powered cool box. If it's just for keeping 1 or 2 bottles of drinks cool on holiday it should be OK, but a bit expensive. You could keep some ice in it too to lower it more than 16c. If you're living out there for a while & want to keep food fresh then you'll need a fridge.

it is for south east Asia where every day will be 30 degrees celsius, therefore this kind of powered cool box will not get cold enough. It is just not worth spending the money on it. I'll just have a normal cool box and keep packing it with ice as the need arises.

I'll be moving around by motorbike, you can easily tie a cool box on the back of a 125.
