Harp and a Monkey mix traditional folk instruments with electronic beats and background an electro-storytelling set of songs, old and new, that celebrate Northern life, in a style that makes then, according to fRoots “one of the most vital and charismatic things happening in English folk music right now”. With harp, viola, guitar, banjo, glockenspiel, electronic beats and a vocal reminiscent of Elbow’s Guy Garvey their songs translate to other areas as tales of everyday life. Featuring Old Wives Tales, the aftermath of war and family days out, with a stage presence that always raises a smile, Harp and a Monkey celebrate real heroes in songs like men Digging Holes and Walking in the Footsteps of Giants – about those who led the Kinder Mass Trespass, then went to fight fascism in Spain. Great reviews for second album All Life is Here are supplemented by their next project: a set of songs relating to the centenary of World War One. Neither jingoistic nor anti war it looks at life for those involved and the role of music in their lives.
