Do you take your cycle on the train?

Recommended Posts

Cycling seems to be an interest that is growing. It is also an activity that the government are trying to encourage.

I would be willing to pay (for the cycle) towards train operators providing more space for cycles. At the moment it is free, but space (on Northern trains at least) is limited to just 2 passengers with cycles per train

From Northern rail.

Northern is strongly committed to promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transport that complements our train service. Our vision is to connect people to opportunities by the most sustainable means and cycling has an important role to play. We can only carry a maximum of two bikes per train.

Since we don't have enough train carriages to carry peak demands of people, and the Government has ruled out buying any more diesel stock for the foreseeable, I'm not sure where you expect them to create the space, even if they wanted your money.

It would be good if the government could maybe part fund or provide a grant (for train operators) for what they are promoting. (Less journeys by car, healthier population, lower costs to the NHS etc). Maybe they just want to steal votes from the greens? :suspect:

In the 70s we put our Lambretta scooter in the guards van and took it to London. Hardly cost anything in those days and we used it to run around on whilst visiting my parents there. It was great !

That's surprising because it's a vehicle that contains petrol!

Did you know that you can't even carry a tin of paint on a London bus?

I was thinking maybe something the size of them guard vans on the end like you used to see on the back of freight trains.

Firstly, those vans don't exist any more. And secondly, passenger trains don't have a back any more.
