New Anchorage bar at West One

It is now easy to get `boutique` beers in Sheffield albeit at some daft prices but that makes it even more important to have Steel City producing `leftfield` ales in cask imho. And I don`t mean that in an old school CAMRA way.

As you probably know, I live in Barnsley and my local is the No.7 - an Acorn tap. They have experimented with kegging a few of their range recently - the most laughable being Barnsley Bitter - I kid you not!

Whilst I am aware that there may be some sense in kegging a weak drinkable pint to make it fizzy, cold and thirst quenching in summer, I wouldn't have thought Barnsley Bitter was the answer. People that drink keg stuff won't pick it - and those that drink Barnsley Bitter wouldn't pay the extra premium. yet it sold. Just goes to show there's no accounting for taste....

Has anyone been yet, and if so please leave your considered opinion here :-)

Thanks

I went not long ago and was really unimpressed. The place advertises itself as specialising in 'Jewish deli' type food, which I was pretty excited about, but it was clear from the menu that the proprietors have no clue about Jewish cuisine whatsoever. Pork ribs are definitely not a Jewish staple, neither is Jewish cuisine renowned for it's mac and cheese burgers.

The menu was really confusing and unhelpfully featured symbols rather than words to describe the food. I ordered something called 'beef round' having no idea what cut of beef it might be or how it might be cooked. It was served with focaccia (although why it would be served with focaccia is anyone's guess) and coleslaw. It was an incredibly dry and salty plate of food and none of the items on the plate seemed to go together particularly well. In fact all of the dishes seemed to be a confused combination of food from various cuisines with no real concern for whether any of the items would complement each other.

My partner ordered the meatballs, which tasted fine (how can you really go wrong?) but the portion size was incredibly stingy. The place suggests it is inspired by the food of East Coast America - you would never get a tiny portion like that anywhere in America!

I won't be eating there again, but if you still want to try it, you'd be best off going for one of the overpriced steaks. They at least come with the usual sides and at least you can be sure what you are getting.

We went the 2nd day it was opened. My partner had ordered the pit beef (or the beef round as you called it) and it was nothing like a pit beef sandwich. It was cut roast beef, rather than sliced with a deli cutter.

Express menu: Crispy squid with mayo, and flat iron steak for 12 pounds. Pretty good. But if you like your steak rectangular with no weird bits steer well clear! It is a tasty cut of meat but has plenty of gristly bits that might put you off! And rare means rare here. Anyway - the main event, the beer. I enjoy the smuttynose even if it is expensive and it's brewdog ipa day up the road. Weird beard choc stout next I reckon. I am not tempted by the portland range until someone else recommends them. Staff are lovely and attentive if a little bit 'Sydney rather than Melbourne' if anyone knows what the hell I am talking about. Will be back.

Had some drinks there tonight. Portland Pale Ale nothing to write home about.

Express menu is tempting but otherwise not in a hurry to head back - the Wick tends to have some ok ales for much cheaper on a Monday - Friday early on. e.g. Enjoyed a pint of Thirst Aid there tonight (not sure who brewed it).

Otherwise the other locals in the area have a much better choice and atmosphere, and you're not spending 4/4.5 (note the lack of '£' and zeros!). I like American beer but it's not the be(er) all and end all for me. Anchorage had no (apple) cider at all tonight which wrangled with my friend, and Brewdog and others have more interesting selections including lots of hoppy cascade pale ales.

Went last Sunday and had the wings followed by burger off the express menu. Burger was awesome but the wings weren't cooked very well and were a bit bland. They were too slimy and greasy rather than crispy. From a personal point of view, they could do with a better selection of condiments, like buffalo wing sauce, chipotle bbq etc. Had a couple of pints of the house American pale ale which was nice. Service was great.
