Jaguar x type Diesel fuel problems

Recommended Posts

Need help and advice please regarding my x type 2 litre diesel. My car has been leaking diesel from a copper nut below the fuel rail probably for around a week before I noticed. Anyway I got it repaired yesturday but when I picked it up I started the engine and noticed it didn't sound right at all it was Realy noisy not very smooth and the revs counter was flickering slightly, there was only 80 miles range in the tank so I went to fill up and go for a run and the noise seemed to fade slightly and run more smoothly ,maybe there was air trapped.

Anyway I took it on the motorway and as soon as I got to 70mph and revs were about 3000 I lost power and the glow plug light come on and then engine management, I pulled onto hard shoulder turned engine off and started back up it seemed to be running ok but with engine management light back on.

I took it back to same mechanic to check code fault and he said I might need a new fuel pump but that we should change fuel filter first.

I don't no what to do or think the car although leaking diesel before was fine when I took it to him, and I'm not sure if I trust him as when I pointed out the noise at garage when I picked it up first he tried to fob me off n say it was my flywheel? Also will his diagnostic kit reliable is it deff a fuel pump or maybe some other fault with fuel system? I don't want to spend £500 on a fuel pump n be left with the same problem.

Any advice appreciated but please no time wasters

Sounds like it might be cheaper in the long run if you go to a Jaguar specialist as the bills soon tot up if your mechanic is being a bit "might be" about the fault.

Prestige are brilliant and a lot cheaper than Hatfields -http://www.sheffieldprestige.co.uk/

This has the Ford Mondeo engine. Tampering with the fuel lines may have introduced air into the system which would make it run uneven.

I had a similar problem on my Mondeo 2ltr derv. Once a week I would get the flashing glow plug light and it would go into limp mode. Turn off and then on again and fine.

If you are in the AA or RAC then keep it running in limp mode and call them out cor a ecu read. I did but they could not detect anything but suggested a garage that had a Ford reader. I did and for £70 was told it was a worn pump. Pump £1k plus fitting and it could go wY beyond the pump. I went on the Ford forums and it was would be a worst case scenario but there was other lighter problems that could cause the problem.

My own mechacic who is an ex Ford dealers told me to get a second opinion from Carters Ford. I did, it was a crankshaft sensor and all in cost me £110 for diagnostics and fitting.

Save time and go to a jag or Ford main dealer for diagnostics. Carters was £35 for a plug in or £75 if it needed a fuel leak off.

Ha ha save time by going to Jag or ford? :) Yeh right!!

More often than not with these engines its injectors that cause limp mode but in this case anything would be a guess wwithout looking at it.

£15 diagnostics or £40 for both diagnostics and a leak off tests if brought to me.

Why dodnt your own mechcanic detect the fail crankshaft sensor? He cant be any good can he

How do you work that out smart arse? He was off work after having an operation when I rung him and even he advised me that not all ecu readers can read all faults. The AA's reader came up with nothing.

As for you xt500 who by the way has usually given good advice in the past 'take it jag or Ford :hihi: yeh right!'

Well I took the advice of the AA man and got robbed of £70 for a misdiagnosis! If I had listened to the first garage he would have been fitting a new pump, filter and clean out my fuel lines for in excess of £1000 for which didn't need doing in the first place. And in future if I get warning lights come on then for £35 I will go to Carters and not some mickey mouse back street rob dog like the AA man sent me to. At least Carters gave me an honest diagnosis and a reasonable price for the diagnostics and fix.

so what u actually mean is your going to charge him 15 pound to plug in and tell him the fault code?? Not "diagnostics"

When referring to "diagnostics" this generally means to diagnose a problem and actually find out what it is

If your going to do a leak off that's work that is required to diagnose a fault. Surely it's one price?

Ha ha Yes i would charge £15 for plugging in my £1000 machine, what a rip off ay?

How else do you think diagnosis should be done?Maybe i should start with checking tyre pressures?

And yes "£40 for both diagnostics and a leak off tests" is one price :)

There is some idiots on this forum!!

AA arnt designed to be your local garage, they are an emergency service to either get you going(if possible) or recover you to somewhere that possibly can.Of course they cant be responsible for every garage.

Diagnosis is in alot of cases just ilimination, everyone can and does get it wrong including dealers,AA and smaller garages.
