ptrA
Thanks Hillsbro. Curious, I don't remember ever catching a number 3 or even knowing of it's existence. I guess mother had a particular routine that she used to stick to, so we always came back via Broomhill. Either that or the times were more convenient. We'll never know! 2 & 3 were good routes. As kids with nothing to do we stayed on for quite a while looking at other areas of Sheffield all for a penny (0/1d), the conductors didn't bother the buses were empty during the day. Annie Bynnol
There are people who mention the number 3 as the opposite to the number 2. Can anyone remember a year when it did this? Was there an opposite of the 59? hillsbro
There are people who mention the number 3 as the opposite to the number 2. Can anyone remember a year when it did this?...The 2 and 3 operated until 1970 (see my post #4 above, with a link to the fare table). A number of other changes were made to Sheffield's buses in 1970 due to declining bus use, for example, the No 16 Low Bradfield began to run 2-hourly instead of hourly. The 54, which until 1970 had run to Rivelin Dams via Crosspool, began to go via Malin Bridge to partly make up for the break in the Outer Circle, and also to replace the 53 which had run via Malin Bridge to King Edward VII hospital three days a week (at a reduce fare for visitors, on production of a visiting card). Thanks for that and certainly explains my experience. The No 2 was still running via Crosspool and the 59 via Clarkehouse Road up until the mid '90s. There was also one 59 that ran from City at about 17:15 via Crosspool to Malin Bridge and then to the garage at Herries Road this at the end had the prefix 7. NigelT
Ah! I always thought the #54 terminated at Crosspool as (unlike the 51) it went up Selbourne Road and turned right to, what I thought until now, was to return to town. This would have been the late '60s when I was knee-high to a grasshopper, and you boarded the bus by an open platform at the back. Could it have been to then turn left onto Manchester Road to continue to Rivelin Dams? Why not just stop on Manchester Road opposite the Crosspool Tavern, as the #2 used to do? hillsbro
Hi NigelT - I can only guess that the 54 went via Selborne Road and Sandygate Road so as to pick up passengers at the stop outside Crosspool Post Office. This was one of the fare stages on the route, as shown on this 1950s fare table. The Rivelin Dams bus service was one of the earliest out-of-town routes. Here is a 1927 postcard showing an AEC bus (note the solid tyres!) outside the Norfolk Arms.
beechnut
'NigelT' may be thinking of the 55 Crosspool bus; this followed the same route as the 54 via Selborne Road and the P.O. on Sandygate Road and then returned to town, while the 54 turned left on to Manchester Road and continued to Rivelin Dams. NigelT
Beechnut may be right - it could have been the 55 I was thinking of, or perhaps both, if they did the same route as far as Crosspool post office. Hillsbro - you have the most amazing collection of information originals - where do you get them from?!
hillsbro
...Hillsbro - you have the most amazing collection of information originals - where do you get them from?!Well I'm just an eccentric old collector!. (a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society, no less). The 1954 bus & tram timetable turned up at a postcard fair at Myers Grove School in the 1980s; there happened to be a dealer there who specialised in local ephemera. The 300-page "bus guide" (as they were always called locally) was a snip at £1.50, and he also had some local street maps. Thanks to postcard and ephemera fairs (and eBay nowadays) I have a useful collection of old postcards views, maps etc. of Sheffield, especially Hillsborough, Rivelin and Wadsley.. smuffin
A round trip on the 2/3 in the late 50s early 60s was the highlight of our Sunday. We were only 10/11.
