Paying income tax,please help

Recommended Posts

My son is 18yrs old ,he has been at college for the last 2 yrs , so no income earned,

He has been working through a agency for the last five weeks consisting of 5 days a week,

He hasn't had any tax stopped from his last 5 weeks wages , is this right as he is worried he will have to pay it all back.

He is employed not self employed , he has had national insurance deducted

Please help

He'll start to pay tax once he hits the min paye threshold (£10K?)

The only downside to this, is if his work ends he may not qualify for JSA as hes not paid enough in.

PS if hes worried about not paying enough tax, he can contact HMRC to confirm that hes on the right paycode and they can help sort it out for him

if ni is being deducted then it's probably ok that income tax isn't being deducted.

we're about half way though the tax year and if he's on the standard tax code then he probably wont pay tax until he's earned over around 5,000 pounds and possibly a bit more since by the time he gets to 5000 we'll be further along the tax year

jsa and some other benefits are based on ni contributions not tax contributions though he still may not qualify if he hasn't made enough contributions.

Thank you for comments he earns 350 per week

you are allowed to earn something like 192 per week before being taxed, however if you start earning part way through the tax year then you have to earn all the 192 for the weeks between 5th april and pay day before starting to pay tax,

If it is viewed that he would earn more than the threshold for the year (10k), he would start to pay tax on the nearest salary. If he isn't due to hit the 10k for the year he won't.

no it isn't

he'll start paying tax when he's used up all the unused tax allowance from the 5th april to pay day

once we've reached the end of the tax year then if he's paid more tax than he should have it will be refunded either by cheque or by adjusting next years tax code.

He has been told by the company he's working for , it's probably because he didn't hand in a p45 as he hasn't got one , so now the company are going to fill out a p46 if that makes any sense

p46 was the form used to get a taxcode, i think its all done by computer now

if he hasn't earned any money or claimed any benefits since 5th april then he wont have a p45. if you dont have a p45 or other notification of a tax code then he'll be on the emergency code which is the same as the standard tax code. i'd imagine he'll be on the standard code so nothing we've talked about will change.

if he's been claiming benefits then he should have got a p45 when he signed off, if not then he should be chasing the job centre
