geared
The question I have is if it did turn out to be a mistake by a contractor, would the council admit to it?? All it takes is a type in an e-mail ordering the work, or a mixup with the signs or in the work order and you've got the incorrect signs placed on the road. Aren't these signs held in with security bolts or something to prevent exactly this kind of 'prank'???

I honestly don't know, but I would imagine anyone with a step ladder and a few tools could get one off and replace it with whatever. And yes I think you're right, the council wouldn't actually admit they dropped a clanger I wouldn't have thought...But who knows?
purdy
It's a bit obvious if the increase in drivers being caught out by the trick signs only appears a few days after you get caught though. Perhaps, when they find the culprits, they should give them all the fines and points accrued by those caught out by the trick signs. Presumably the speed checks aren't in opperation every day. So it is a bit of a long shot putting up signs on the off chance there is a trap.

I think altus means it the other way round..someone gets caught speeding then puts up a fake sign, takes a photo and says "Look..it was a 40mph limit when I got done for doing 37" .. if lots of other people get caught too well, that's a bonus and lends more weight to the lie..
