gimp27
That new tax thingy didnt come into effect till 1st Oct, so I cant see why not. Just send the disc off and see what happens. You cant sorn a car that is taxed.
geared
What date did the seller put on the V5 transfer document, because that one will be the important one. If they were sneeky they would put the 1st October, that way the DVLA would refund the tax money to them instead of letting it pass onto you. They wouldn't be required to hand in the tax disc as it's now redundant.

geared
You should be ok then. To be sure you can check the TAX and MOT status of the car online, there's a free government service to let you do it here: https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/Default.aspx ---------- Post added 13-10-2014 at 10:32 ---------- Check it every couple of days to make sure they don't strip the tax off the car - because you know they wouldn't bother to tell you before they did it, and the first you'd hear about it is when you're sat in the back of a police car. As soon as you SORN the vehicle a refund is automatically generated. No need to send the tax disc back anymore.

True under the new system. I used the 'old system' (with sending the disc back) in late September, whence my recollection
