Is it OK to pay disabled workers less than the minimum wage?

Recommended Posts

Would a physically or mentally disbaled person go for a job as a builder? Highly unlikely.

Look most jobs these days are in the service industry which a lot of disabled could do. I cant think of many office jobs disabled can't do.

Paying less than nmw is just an excuse for huge corporations to exploit the workforce.

There are more ways to be disabled than physically, and other conditions which are not counted as being disabled which can affect the prospects to find, and ability to perform, a job... and even for some physically disabled people working in a normal office is beyond their physical capabilities.

We are faced with a choice, accept that there are people, for whatever reason, who are incapable (through no fault of their own, not because they are bone idle) of performing to an adequate standard to keep even a NMW job and do nothing to hep them into some form of employment or we put measures in place to assist them in gaining some form of work, probably subsidized, to enable them to contribute (financially) to society.

For the first option if we are going to do nothing to help them find work then it is behoven upon us to support them.

For the second we are at least giving them a chance to feel a part of society at large.

Then we support the disabled with benefit payments. And if they are fit enough to compete in the job market, we pay them the same as everyone else. Simple.

What about the people that want to work but aren't fit enough to compete in the job market, do they just have to sit at home and rot?

This thread is about the people who are not able to compete in the job market. the central issue is, do we consign them to the scrap heap or put measures in place to allow them the possibility of some kind of work.

If they are not fit to work, then the country pays these people out of tax money. If they are they get paid same as everyone else.

No we pay out and let them have a life. If they can work, iys under the same conditions as everyone else. The thread is about if its ok to pay the disabled under the minimum wage. Clearly it's not ok.

So if they want to work and can do a job, but just can't do the job as well as an able bodied person they should be forced to sit at home and watch TV and claim benefits?

What about the people that want to work but can't work at a fast pace or for long periods of time, their disability might mean they need to stop and have a rest more often than other workers, or they can't work as fast as everyone else, do they just have to sit at home and rot? Or do we find ways to support employers that is willing to employ them.

Yes, under house arrest. Forced to sit at home and watch this morning. Its the law.
