echo beach
Listen to the fantastic sounds of Joe Cocker's unique live recording at the Esquire club in Sheffield during 1963 produced by his former manager and club owner the late Terry Thornton, This is a revised track and just put on YouTube this week to share the great nostalgia sounds and photos of club members and other star acts including - Jimmy Crawford, Dave Berry, Frank White, Georgie Fame etc. Performing as Vance Arnold & the Avengers, the recording was used as a demo tape by Terry to try to get him more work away from Sheffield. See - Joe Cocker Show 1963. Thanks for that excellent audio-visual link PS. Takes me right back to the vibrant days of the Esquire Club and the early '60s. A time never to be repeated and yet never forgotten by many of us who were there. echo.
rainbow2411
It was Shalesmoor and I think THIS is the building that was the Acorn. That's it, much cleaner today. We couldn't buy alcohol so used to pop in the Ship, do you remember the Zen Den, it was just the back room painted black I think. I think I have a picture of me in there, taken by the ever present and a creepy Ivan the 'resident' photographer.

neepsendlane
I was told that Joe once owned a big American car while living in Sheffield ,although I have read his Autobiography by Sheffield author J.P. Bean the book makes no metion of this. Perhaps another urban myth . As an after thought I remember seeing Joe at the Lyceum in the early 80's there was no seats in the Auditorium as the Theatre was in the process of being tidied up at that time so every one was crammed in front of the stage. Joe as usual brought the house down.

Yes I think you're right it is an urban myth. Well that is solved then! although I do know that Joe had a new Rover and a Daimler parked alongside the old Cortina's and Morris Minors parked on Tasker Road when he first came back from America.
